Adam McSherry’s stellar three-try performance helped lift St Patrick’s College to a 32-16 success over Trinity Bay High in a fierce Aaron Payne Cup contest on Wednesday.

The flying fullback delivered a dominant performance, scoring his side’s opening two tries before snatching another late to secure his side’s first victory of the season.

Just like they did last week against Ignatius Park, Trinity Bay High burst out of the gates with a formidable start.

Jack Turner’s incisive play breached the St Patrick’s defence, setting the stage for D’Artanyan Connolly to showcase his blistering pace and secure the opening try.

Their momentum continued, but with a stroke of luck this time, as Elsiyah Suavai-Laumatia’s hopeful kick rebounded fortuitously back into his own lap leading to another quick score.

St Pats swiftly turned the tide in their favour on the back of McSherry’s remarkable scoring spree. He bagged consecutive tries to level the scores.

The intensity of the contest reached a peak with Reuben Saron’s sensational solo effort, injecting a moment of brilliance into the match as he surged past defenders to secure his team’s fourth try.

Although Antony Rayson’s late try injected a glimmer of hope for Trinity Bay, it was not enough to halt St Patrick’s College’s relentless onslaught.

Cohen Jackson and Jack Thorburn were outstanding for St Patrick’s, their formidable presence in the forward pack instrumental to their team’s success.

Despite the loss, Trinity Bay showed flashes of brilliance, with Connolly, Suavai-Laumatia, and Jaxson Rayson showcasing their exceptional talents throughout the match.

COWBOYS CHALLENGE

Defending champions St Patrick’s flexed their muscles in no uncertain terms by shutting out Trinity Bay in a complete Cowboys Challenge performance on Wednesday.

St Pat’s, who were well beaten by Kirwan in their opening round last week, jumped out of the blocks to lead 10-0 before 10 minutes had elapsed. They scored two more tries before halftime to lead 22-0 at the break.

Although their momentum slowed in the second half, they still grabbed two more tries, the final one in the dying stages to win 30-0.

The defeat is the second successive one for Trinity Bay, who lost 16-10 to Ignatius Park in their opening clash.

PREVIEW

Trinity Bay coach Dan Weston is adamant his side is in the Payne Cup to “win games” as a showdown with reigning champions St Patrick’s College looms into view.

While they gave up 24 unanswered-points in the second half of their clash with Ignatius Park, Weston said the belief in his side remained strong.

The Cairns league nursery had led 10-0 at halftime after shocking their rivals with a strong mix of physicality and desire.

“Our major takeaway (from that game) is that our real desire this year is to win games, rather than just be competitive,” Weston said.

“We know our aim of winning games this year is a realistic one. There’s a lot to learn from that second half with regards to our defence, but it’s encouraging because we know that we were nowhere near our best and we’re still competitive right up until 10 minutes to go in the game.

“We feel we’ve improved a lot on last year, we know we’re not going to be the dominant force of the competition. We’re here to be the underdog that can upset a few teams if they’re not on their day. If they come to our games not ready, we will upset teams.”

Trinity Bay will need to be on red alert for a St Patrick’s College side who were embarrassed by Kirwan High 32-6 in a Payne Cup grand final rematch.

St Patrick’s lost the physicality battle around the middle of the field, one area which Trinity Bay excelled in against Ignatius Park.

Weston said the future was bright for the Trinity Bay program, with the majority of the players in their Opens squad coming from Year 11.

Thet crop includes livewire halfback D’Artanyan Connolly, who possesses a rare mix of speed, skill and vision, as well as bullocking middle forward Jake Russo.

Captain Shannon Bowen also emerged as a standout player in the opening round, showcasing leadership qualities as a crucial lock in the team’s structure.
