It’s been more than 20 days since they’ve taken to the field but Innisfail coach Leon Hallie believes his team will be ready to roll come their Far North Queensland Rugby League return on Saturday.
After taking a break for Easter, a monster weekend of footy awaits with the Leprechauns and Kangaroos facing off in the match of the round live on KommunityTV.
The under-19, reserves and A-grade clashes at Callendar Park will all be broadcast from 3pm.
Hallie’s side has enjoyed an even longer break than most after having the bye in round four.
By the time they face the Kangaroos, Innisfail would not have played since a 64-18 thumping of Edmonton back on April 6.
However, Hallie expected the extended time away from match play would not have a significant effect on his team.
“It hasn’t made too much of a difference for us, you generally have this situation every year with the Easter break,” Hallie said.
“It’s pretty good at the start of the year to be honest, you lose a bit of momentum but it also gives a chance to address some of those early injuries and niggles that you pick up.
“We’ve just kept training as normal as possible during the week.”
Innisfail began the season with a convincing win over Tully before falling to Atherton in round two and then bouncing back against the Storm.
Hallie said the team had responded well after a significant amount of turnover from last season, when the squad lost around a dozen players.
“It’s a different group this year, we’ve picked up some players here and there, but it’s a new group that’s still committed to the team and willing to work hard for one another,” he said.
Hallie commended the efforts of Northern Pride-listed young gun Braithan Ketchell, who he had seen come all the way through the junior ranks.
“I’ve known him since he was a kid, he played a lot of footy with my son,” he said.
“It’s good to see him take that next step in his career, and he’s been really good for us when he’s come back into the side.”
Kangaroos meanwhile have experienced a mixed bag so far this season.
Promising victories over Ivanhoes and Yarrabah have been bookended by defeats to early frontrunners Brothers and Suburbs.
The A-grade game between Innisfail and Kangaroos will kick off at 6pm, and will be preceded by the under-19s at 3pm and the reserves at 4.30pm.
All live streams will be exclusively on KommunityTV.
