Westfields Sports High showed why they are the team to beat in the Schoolgirls Cup with a dominant 50-4 defeat of Illawarra Sports High at Sid Parrish Park.
Despite a couple of trysaving efforts earlier in the set, Illawarra conceded first points after Georgia Wansey was able to ground the ball after a mix-up at the back, getting Westfields off to a flyer inside three minutes.
The lead quickly became 12 as the visitors made Illawarra pay for another mistake, this time through a rampaging Felila Fakalelu who proved too strong from close range.
The ship was somewhat steadied, before Taylah Meagher went straight through the front door, breaking through the middle of the defence to continue Westfields’ dominance.
Temeike Withers heaped further pain on Illawarra when taking on the line and making their advantage 22.
A brilliant effort from Ella Churchill to reach out and score gave Illawarra a much-needed score heading into the sheds, as they trailed 22-4 at the break.
Any momentum swung straight back to the visitors, with Hayloh Talagi crossing less than a minute into the second half.
The strength of Faith Masina saw her post the sixth try of the afternoon for the visitors, spinning through one and reaching out to make it 32-4.
They didn’t have to wait long to stretch the lead past 30, with a spread to the left getting Hine Rikiti over out wide.
Ella Ropata. Layla Tima and a second to Rikiti put the finishing touches on a comprehensive display that saw Westfields SHS improve to 2-0 and solidify themselves as the team to beat in 2025.
PREVIEW
Illawarra Sports High School has a tall mountain to climb to get on the board in the Schoolgirls Cup with one of the competition’s heavyweights coming to town.
Westfields Sports High has flown out of the gates to start its campaign, and the formlines around them only strengthen their claims to go further than their preliminary final appearance last year.
The Westfields charge is being led by a pair of Tigers junior representatives with plenty of spark.
Fullback Lilea Seville and dummy-half Dawn Tui have brought their potent combination from the Lisa Faiola Cup into the Schoolgirls arena, teaming up with Julliana Koli (Cronulla) and Temeike Withers (Parramatta) to form the most potent spine in the competition.
They were able to take down a strong Central Coast Sports College with relative ease in their season opener, prevailing 32-12 over a team boasting Lisa Fiaola Cup player of the year Mia Vaotuua.
To show just how strong that Pool B victory was, CCSC came out in round two and put the cleaners through Matraville Sports to the tune of 60-0.
That was the same Matraville side that was able to get the better of Illawarra in round one, with a late Talita Haumono try proving the difference.
It creates an almighty task for Illawarra to record its first win of the season, but they can take solace in the fact they have a strong roster on their own books.
Madison Hemopo was strong for the Steelers throughout a Lisa Fiaola Cup campaign that saw them narrowly miss the finals.
Laila Poto, Loata Latu and Michala Hardy were also part of that team, with the trio all performing well in the middle.
They also boast an attacking weapon on their edge in the form of captain Faith Masina, who is coming off an excellent Tarsha Gale Cup campaign with Canterbury.
With a desperate Illawarra and clinical Westfields going to battle, this has all the makings of an instant classic.
