Wavell SHS’s fullback Timahna Tandy was a 20 point hero as the Warriors Langer Trophy campaign started in a blaze of glory by beating Ipswich SHS 36-18.

On the annual Homecoming Day, when the Wavell SHS community past and present descend on No. 1 oval to celebrate rugby league at the school, the Wavell forwards roared and the backs pounced.

Tandy scored two tries and kicked six from seven as Wavell turned an 18-12 cliffhanger into a 30-12 advantage and finally a 38-18 victory.

Tandy’s second try was sublime, a brilliant kick and chase effort which was crucial after Ipswich had closed to within six points of the Warriors.

That try by Tandy came off the back of two match changing runs by the Webb brothers, winger Ruben and halfback Charlie, who took their side from defence into attack.

Wavell’s 18-6 halftime lead was aided by rousing goal line defence when the Warriors pack took like soldiers on a fortress wall, repelling Ipswich’s impact forwards.

Wavell, featuring 11 players in their Langer Trophy starting debut matches, played a quick, upbeat game featuring swift ball movement that pressured the Ipswich defence.

Could Wavell have started any better? No, as prop Jimmy Spicer looked like a three quarter in a front rowers number with an explosive 30m burst which came completely out of the blue.

He came, he went and he conquered, showing surprising speed for a big man. Wavell led six nil after just four minutes.

The season was only nine minutes old when Ipswich fullback Tom Parker hoisted an ever so high bomb into a starry night sky – only to brilliantly regather his own kick running 20m at full pace.

Could we have seen the try of the season already?

PREVIEW

Wavell State High will have the weight of a local community on their side as the school kicks off the ‘closest ever’ Langer Trophy season against rivals Ipswich State High.

Wavell will host the Tuesday night showdown as part of its annual ‘Homecoming Day’ festivities on the school’s oval.

The day celebrates past and present students at the proud nursery which has produced notable NRL, state and international stars since the 1970s like David Wright, Bob Cock, Darryl Brohman, Greg Inglis, the Nikorima brothers and Adam Blair.

The clash between Wavell and Ipswich State High will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV and the Courier Mail as part of a big opening night double header along with the Walters Cup (Year 10) clash from 5.15pm.

It also kicks off a massive first round of the Langer Trophy, with many tipping this season to be the tightest run race in its history due to a revitalised finals structure.

This season the Langer Trophy will see only the top five sides qualify for the semi-finals. Previously all teams were involved in a playoff series.

Ipswich coach Joshua Bretherton said the competition was the closest in his 16 years involved in schoolboy rugby league.

“The strength of the competition is the strongest it has ever been,” Bretherton said.

Wavell SHS coach Paul Stanley echoed Bretherton’s sentiment.

Bretherton said the race for the premiership was wide open, with last year’s seventh-placed Redcliffe State High considered genuine title contenders this season.

“It is not just two or three quality teams and four or five very good teams, it is a collection of genuine, quality sides,’’ Bretherton said.

Wavell coach Stanley said as a result of the new finals’ format, starting well was essential in the seven round season.

“Our first four games before the holidays are against teams which have been on top of the ladder the last few seasons,” he said.

“You can’t afford to be dropping games early.’’

The Langer Trophy will be exclusively live streamed on the Courier Mail and across all News Corp Australia digital mastheads as part of KommunityTV’s unbeaten coverage of the NRL Schools League competitions.
