WHAT WE LEARNED
NORTHERN NSW BREAK INTO FINALS
Ex-Matildas striker Alicia Ferguson can breathe a massive sigh of relief.
The Northern NSW coach helped engineer a major turn of fortunes for her players, with a 4-0 win over Tasmania enough to secure their spot in the quarter-finals and in turn knock the girls from the Apple Isle out of the race.
It was a major turnaround in form for the Northern NSW girls who had been winless up to that point of the tournament.
NSW Sky remain the team to beat in the Under-16 title race after they made sure of a perfect run through the pool stages with a 1-0 win over South Australia.
APIA Leichhardt young gun Zoe Panagopolous scored the match winner for the sky blues, as they prepare for a quarter-final showdown with Queensland White.
Queensland Maroon are the only other Under-16s side to finish the pool stages with a spotless record, with Brisbane striker Melanie La Frentz scoring a double to dispatch of a finals-bound Charles Perkins XI on Thursday.
TITLE CONTENDERS MAKE STATEMENTS
If Thursday’s action proved anything, it’s that there still remains a number of sides well in contention to be named national champions… and a few that aren’t.
Three incredibly lopsided results in the U15 division kicked off the day with NSW Navy thumping Victoria White 8-0, Queensland Maroon doing the same against the Northern Territory and Northern NSW going one better with a 9-0 annihilation of Tasmania.
The Navy’s avalanche of goals began just five minutes after the opening kickoff, with Keziah Behringer taking advantage of both some poor defense and a goalkeeping blunder.
Zofiya Gwozdecky and Lola Greenberg both joined the party inside the opening 20 minutes, with Greenberg’s second putting Navy ahead 4-0 at half-time.
The drubbing continued post the break, with Navy piling on another four goals to break Victoria’s spirit and hand them a second straight goalless game.
Queensland’s big win was their second in as many days, with the Maroons also knocking off Victoria White 6-0 on Tuesday.
Lara Phillips was the star of Wednesday’s win, notching up a hat trick with a terrorizing nine-minute second-half stretch that is sure to be remembered.
Matilda Fleming scored a hat trick of her own in Northern NSW’s win over Tasmania, with the black and reds taking just two minutes to have the Apple Isle on the back foot.
They had a 3-0 lead before the 20 minute mark before slamming on another six goals to produce one of the tournament’s most one-sided results so far.
NSW Sky and Northern NSW both continued to heap the pain on their rivals late on Thursday, with NSW Sky powering past Tasmania 10-0, while their northern neighbours scored a 5-2 win over South Australia.
WESTERN AUSTRALIA ACHIEVE IMPRESSIVE FEAT
Given their form throughout the week, it wasn’t much of a surprise to see Western Australia’s U15 outfit once again secure victory on Thursday.
And while they looked impressive in the 2-0 win over Queensland White, the victory ensured they would end the group stages with a rare feat intact.
Across their four matches, the girls from the west recorded a clean sheet and finished undefeated with three wins and a draw.
Kicking off with 4-0 drubbing against New South Wales Country on Tuesday, they backed that up with a 3-0 win against Capital Football before a 0-0 draw against Victoria Blue on Wednesday.
While clearly a team effort, the majority of the credit has to go to WA goalkeeper’s Grace Sciascia-Walsh and Matilda Engler, with the duo splitting keeping duties across the four matches.
Their remarkable goal difference of 9-0 secured them a first-place finish in group C, finishing with 10 points and three goals ahead of second-place Victoria Blue.
NSW SHOOTERS SIT TOP
A hat trick in the 10-0 win over Tasmania has propelled NSW Sky striker Madena Moussa into the lead in the race for the Under-15 golden boot award.
Moussa has leapfrogged teammate Jada Taylor into first place with six goals this week.
Taylor remains in second spot with five goals despite failing to find the net against the Apple Isle girls.
Both NSW Sky teammate Selena Mifsud and Northern NSW’s Mackenzie Preston-Poole closed out Thursday’s action with four-goal hauls to join Taylor on five for the week.
PREVIEW
One of the Emerging Matildas Championships surprise packets has a chance to lock up a finals spot on what is becoming a do-or-die day for teams on Thursday.
The wheat is quickly becoming sorted from the chaff at Valentine’s Sports Park in Sydney’s west, with teams getting one last chance to stake their finals claim on day three of the tournament.
It’s an early start to Thursday’s action with Field 2 and Field 3 getting underway from 8.30am, while Field 1 matches kick off from 10am.
Watch all the action from Field 3 above, watch Field 2 and Field 1 below, along with the full schedule of play.
Following a big win over South Australia on Wednesday, Tasmania is emerging a shock finals qualifier and will need to pick up a win over Northern NSW to cement their spot in the play-offs.
Undefeated reigning champions NSW Sky will finish on top of the group after already securing two wins for the week.
Queensland Maroon look destined to finish atop Group B but will face off against a rejuvenated Charles Perkins Invitational XI.
The race to emerge from Group C is wide open with Western Australia sitting third despite not having lost a match this week.
The Under-15s finals picture is much more murky, with teams like Queensland Maroon set to play two games on the final day of the pool stage.
The Sunshine State girls are in the box seat to finish atop Group B, but will need to be at their best in what could be a match of the round contender against Malaysia.
Western Australia are sitting pretty atop Group C with two wins and a draw to start the week and will look forward to having the afternoon off after an early clash against Queensland White.
It’s a match Queensland White need to win to stave off a late finals raid from rivals NSW Country.
It promises to be a big day of action with every match counting towards what will be an exciting finals series.
