CHLOE Osborne won’t be able to travel to Adelaide for Sunday’s grand final, but her beloved Wanderers will hear her cheering all the way from Western Sydney.
Earlier this year 12-year-old Chloe, whose mum Kerilyn is one of the team’s masseurs, was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a form of cancer. Because of her treatment she is only allowed to travel within an hour radius of the hospital, but she makes sure next to nothing gets in the way of her Wanderers schedule.
“She made her doctors schedule her treatments so she’s at hospital as little as possible on their game days, even if she couldn’t be at the game,” Kerilyn said.
Before her diagnosis Chloe spent the first half of the season as one of the ball girls. She’s only just been given permission to kick a ball again and she is absolutely inspired by the Wanderers players and the club as a whole.
“She’ll have days at home when she’s really down and we’ll just mention something about not being able to go to the football on the weekend and she just picks herself up and gets on with it because it’s all about being around the boys as much as possible,” Kerilyn said. “Any time she’s finding it tough she puts on a Wanderers shirt or thinks about going to the game and grabs a soccer ball at home. It’s incredible to watch.”
Chloe doesn’t have a favourite player at the club - though she wants to play like Shannon Cole - because they’ve all been a source of motivation every time they see her.
“When she was diagnosed she came down to one of the open training sessions and the boys were amazing. They all just came up to talk to her, and they would talk to her about normal stuff, not about her being sick. She just finds them totally inspirational. Any time she can she comes to training and we’ve been to more football games this season than we ever anticipated we would be going to.”
