Wyong preview: Trainer Jason Coyle is excited to see if Catch The Glory can repeat her impressive debut performance

Trainer Jason Coyle is naturally eager to see if his exciting young prospect Catch The Glory can repeat her dazzling debut win when she heads to Wyong.

Jason Coyle has trained 99 winners at Kembla but he’d be hard pressed to find a more impressive one among the tally than his last one at the Illawarra Turf Club.

The horse in question is Catch The Glory who created a huge impression thanks to her barnstorming near last to first win in her 1000m Midway Maiden (1000m) debut on August 17.

“She was very green as they can be when they go to the races for the first time,” Coyle said.

“Mitchell Bell rode her and he came in and said she wanted to do too much and then she didn’t want to do enough.

“She was on the bridle, off the bridle, but he loved the way when he asked for her effort, she was there to give it.

“I think the biggest part for me was what she did after shouldering and bumping with another horse.

“I find it rare that first starters can do that and then accelerate like she did.”

Catch The Glory’s next mission arrives in the last race on the Wyong Cup card where Coyle’s flashy filly will jump from barrier 1 with Dylan Gibbons in the saddle.

“She obviously has to go back to the races in what looks to be one of those races that we will go back to and say ‘geez that was a quality Class 1’,” Coyle said.

“If she can do something similar again then she is definitely heading in the right direction for me.

“You always like to see them do it a couple of times at the races before you get too excited about them.

“She is hopefully going to learn a little bit from her first run and travel in a nice position, hopefully off a few horses and if she can get that run at the right time, I feel like she showed a good turn of foot last start and should be strong late.”

Catch The Glory will have company on the float from Warwick Farm to Wyong from her stablemate Maz Kanata.

Coyle was rightfully bullish about his mare’s prospects of a third win at start 10 until they were dealt the outside alley in the 11 horse field with Jason Collett aboard.

“I just felt like that from a good barrier, that race looked perfect given she has raced well at Wyong,” Coyle said.

“I think if she drew well, she just puts herself in that similar spot to where she was when she won last start and gives herself every chance.

”It can get a little bit messy from that gate but the nice thing is Jas has had a sit on before and she’s fit, she’s well.

“There’s the one turn at Wyong so he’s just got to give her the most economical run in transit for the first half of the race to give her a chance to do what she did last start.”

Coyle bought the aforementioned Catch The Glory for $50,000 at the Magic Millions National Yearling sale in 2023.

He has known Maz Kanata since the day she was foaled having bred the mare using his San Domenico and Run To The Rose winner Va Pensiero over the Danehill granddaughter Mari Pintau.

MCEVOY AND WALLER CHASING A SECOND WYONG CUP

Chris Waller’s first winner in Australia came at Wyong in September of 1998.

The man who has since trained for both The King and The Queen aims to bag his ninth Wyong Cup with either the VRC Derby winner Manzoice, the up and coming Medatsu or the $2.60 Fixed Odds favourite, Etna Rosso.

An Irish-bred grandson of English Derby winning siblings Galileo and Sea The Stars, Etna Rosso will be ridden by Kerrin McEvoy whose tally of 192 wins with Waller include the 2018 Wyong Cup aboard Carzoff.

Etna Rosso arrived in Australia having performed honourably in a sequence of three stakes-races starting with his half-length second in the Listed Yeats Stakes in Ireland.

“He was great at his first prep here winning at the end of it over 2100m and his two runs back have been full of merit,” McEvoy said.

“He is a very genuine horse and he has got a good turn of gears which can help offset certain things that can happen in races. It’s a good asset to have.

“I won the race for Chris with a horse on the minimum weight once before and Etna Rosso is on an upward curve so with 54kg, he can definitely make his presence felt.”

McEvoy will don the famous two blue colours of Kia Ora when he partners the $550,000 Magic Millions Yearling purchase Yoshinobu who makes a much anticipated return to racing.

“He has trialled up twice and trialled well each time so it looks a nice target for him there,” McEvoy said.

“He is a big strong fellow so he should put forward a good run on Friday.

“It is only a smallish field and he has got gate-speed so he’ll be somewhere in the running line

“He will appreciate a bigger track but he should be able to get away with it from a low draw.”

McEvoy’s other fancied mount on the Wyong card is Rip Off, a lightly-raced daughter of Godolphin’s 2004 SAJC Australasian Oaks winner, Rinky Dink.

“She is a track winner who is in good form,” the three times Everest and Melbourne Cup winning jockey said.

“She has a consistent record and it looks good for her. She’s drawn to get a nice run so she’s another nice chance for me on the day.”
