Trainer Joe Pride admits it’s a “miracle” Think About It is still alive before confirming his 2023 The Everest winner had run his last race.

Bella Nipotina was tough winning The Everest but it was last year’s victor who undoubtedly produced the most courageous display at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

Think About It collapsed on the track on the point of the home turn after suffering a massive bleeding attack.

But in what was one of the most amazing things seen on a racetrack in recent times, the gun son of So You Think rose from the turf and was able to be walked back to the tie-up stalls.

Think About It will continue to be monitored by vets over the coming days but Pride said the gelding looked ‘bright’ on Sunday morning at his Warwick Farm stable.

“He looks like he normally would after a race,” he said.

“It’s quite astonishing because of what he has gone through, he went through a massive bleed and basically passed out and rolled.

“You would have thought he would do a bit more damage but thankfully he is OK.

“We are definitely going to retire him. Horses bleed and race again but the extent of this bleed was just too much.”

‘The plan was simple – trust Bella’: Racing’s iron lady wins The Everest

Proven Thoroughbreds managing director Jamie Walter felt retirement was the only option for Think About It.

The syndicator had celebrated a career best victory with Think About It on the same day last year but was amazed just to see the talented sprinter walk away from the incident.

“It is quite miraculous,” Walter said.

“The vets were great and were right onto it and then the crowd cheered when he came in which was quite uplifting.

“He was quite heavily sedated when he was walking back in but he is a very courageous horse.

“Twelve months is a long time in racing.”

Think About It will long be remembered for his remarkable 2023. He went on a nine race winning streak not seen at the top level since the incomparable superstar Winx.

Think About It won twice at Group 1 level in the Kingsford Smith Cup and Stradbroke Handicap during that stretch before having his crowning moment with an Everest victory during the spring.

“To be fair to him, he put so much into 2023,” Pride said.

“He won nine straight and I think he left everything he had on the track with those runs and The Everest last year.

“He wasn’t quite the same at Rosehill for his last race last spring and hasn’t been the same horse since.

“There are signs there that he wasn’t the horse he was so we will finish up.”

Meanwhile, Pride confirmed brilliant Group 1 King Charles III Stakes winner Ceolwulf has been spelled.
