Trainer Brad Widdup believes a ‘mature’ Tenbury Wells is ready for his latest shot a stakes racing at Rosehill

A low-key approach by trainer Brad Widdup has Tenbury Wells primed and full of confidence for the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday on his way to a Group 1 Grand Final.

Trainer Brad Widdup has laid the foundations out of the limelight but is ready to throw Tenbury Wells back in the deep end in Saturday’s Group 3 $500,000 Gloaming Stakes (1800m) at Rosehill Gardens.

A pair of dominant victories on the provincial circuit at Kembla Grange have Tenbury Wells well prepared for his latest crack in stakes grade.

Tenbury Wells was tested in stakes grade twice during his two-year-old season, including when the colt finished a long distance off Broadsiding in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes in April.

Widdup believes the son of Fastnet Rock is better equipped for the challenge this time around.

“I think he has really grown up this preparation,” Widdup said.

“He’s a mature horse for this time of year and has done a really good job so far so hopefully that can continue because he has been foolproof really.

“He seems to really enjoy his racing that’s for sure.”

Tenbury Wells, to be ridden by Tyler Schiller, is a $5 third elect in the Gloaming Stakes behind last Saturday’s Dulcify Stakes winner Swiftfalcon ($2.70 fav) and Victorian raider Henlein ($3.50).

Saturday will be the fork in the road for Tenbury Wells as Widdup eyes either a Group 1 tilt in Sydney or Melbourne.

“A mile and a half is going to be his real go but this will give us an indication if we stay for the Spring Champion or go to Melbourne for the Victoria Derby,” Widdup said.

“It’s made it hard to run in everything with the Spring Champion and Derby a week apart so this race will decide which way we go.”

Tenbury Wells is $8 for the Spring Champion Stakes (October 26) and $11 for the Victoria Derby (November 2).

Meanwhile, Widdup admits stablemate Phearson ($61) will need ‘a miracle’ to win the $1.5 million Alan Brown Stakes (1400m) after the gelding drew towards the outside.

He will give lightly-raced filly Maili ($81) her chance in the Listed Tapp-Craig (1400m).
