Randwick inside mail: James Cummings confident Broadsiding won’t be affected by distance drop in Group 1 All Aged Stakes at Randwick

Godolphin trainer James Cummings says Broadsiding is “ready to run the best race of his campaign” despite an unconventional path to the Group 1 All Aged Stakes.

Godolphin maestro James Cummings will pull off the training coup of the Sydney autumn carnival if Broadsiding wins the Group 1 $1.5m All Aged Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

Broadsiding won the Rosehill Guineas over 2000m last start but has been freshened with a month between runs and a barrier trial to have the speed necessary for the 1400m weight-for-age sprint.

It’s an unconventional preparation but Cummings believes Broadsiding is “ready to run the best race of his campaign”.

“He’s freshened up beautifully, I’ve loved the look of the horse this week,’’ Cummings said.

“It’s no mean feat, this All Aged Stakes, it’s quite an assembly of very good horses. (But) I do suspect he’s ready to run the best race of his campaign.”

Cummings said Broadsiding will get his opportunity to claim a fifth Group 1 win after drawing ideally in barrier three.

“I can see the horse enjoying a good run in the race and he’s got an enviable record at 1400m,’’ Cummings said.

“He produced a knockout gallop during the week, and he seems to us to be perfectly ready for this assignment at the weekend.

“There’s no doubt it’s a lot to ask a young horse, but we’ve asked him before and he was there to run a race in the Cox Plate (third to Via Sistina).

“He’s bringing some of the best of the three-year-old form, we just keep seeing the form franked from behind Broadsiding, which is no less encouraging.”

Broadsiding defeated Aeliana in the Rosehill Guineas and that filly then came out and monstered her rivals to win the ATC Australian Derby by nearly five lengths.

In latest TAB betting for the All Aged Stakes, Broadsiding is on the third line of betting at $6.50 behind TJ Smith Stakes winner Briasa at $3.50 and Jimmysstar at $6.

PRICE CHECK

Swiftfalcon (race 3) has been a significant firmer for the Frank Packer Plate, coming in from an opening quote of $2.30 to $1.95. Alabama Fox (race 4) opened at $51 for the PJ Bell Stakes but is into $21 and continues to firm. In the All Aged Stakes (race 8) Kimochi’s quote has been almost halved from $15 to $8.

SECTIONAL STARS

Buffalo (race 7) took a few strides to balance up in the straight but when he gained some momentum he charged home to finish a close third to Vinrock in the ATC Sires’. Buffalo was timed to run his final 600m in 34.77sec and his closing 200m sectional in a 11.98sec. He was the only horse in the race to break 35sec and 12sec for the final 600m and 200m respectively.

Jimmysstar (race 8) settled well back in the TJ Smith Stakes and was last on the turn before angling into the clear and unleashing a powerful finishing surge to claim third placing. Jimmysstar ran his closing 600m in a flying 32.76sec, the best of the meeting.

TRIAL POINTERS

Need Some Luck (race 5) endured a very wide run in his Randwick 1050m trial but he loomed up to win only to be run down near the line by the race-fit Evaporate. On Day 1 of The Championships. Evaporate won the Carbine Club Stakes to underline the merit of the trial form. Need Some Luck is resuming but has a good first-up record and should go close.

I’mintowin (race 10) ran well in a Hawkesbury barrier trial before stepping out in a Warwick Farm heat when he chased the speedy Felix Majestic throughout to finish third. Godolphin’s multiple Group 1 winner Broadsiding ran fourth in the trial. I’mintowin is resuming but does sprint well fresh and he did win over 1400m first-up in very fast time (1min 21.18sec) at Kembla Grange last spring.

BEST BET

Clean Energy (race 4) was never on the track in the Bell Stakes last start, trapped three-wide without cover but she still had the temerity to loom up as a winning hope in the final 100m. She’s finished the closest of fourths, beaten less than a half length in what was a very courageous run. Clean Energy has drawn perfectly in barrier two and is the one to beat.

VALUE BET

Xidaki (race 9) is an underrated sprinter resuming in the Hall Mark Stakes. He usually sprints well fresh as he did first-up last spring when narrowly beaten by Ostraka in the Silver Eagle. The Peter Snowden-trained Xidaki trialled nicely at Warwick Farm recently when he closed strongly late for third in an 804m heat. Xidaki is primed to sprint well fresh and at $23 is terrific each way value.
