RACING Queensland boss Jason Scott is set to take control of the Queensland Greyhound Racing Club (QGRC) ahead of the highly anticipated opening of ‘The Q’ in May.

The shock move comes following the departure of Peter Gleeson as the club’s CEO on Thursday.

Scott announced the decision to vacate his role as Racing Queensland boss last month and will now serve out his notice period ensuring the $85 million ‘The Q’ facility is delivered on schedule.

“I’ve been seconded to get in there and do the job and get things into shape,” Scott said.

“There are certain aspects of The Q project that are significantly behind schedule that need immediate attention.

“I’ve told the (QGRC) board that the best way to deliver this project is for me to be on the ground from Monday and start getting things done.

“The plan is to start trialling from March 5 and there’s a lot that needs to be done for that to happen.

“I’ll take some staff with me, including project managers and finance people, we need to get this right.”

RQ Chief Financial and Strategy Officer Lachlan Murray will serve as Acting CEO while Scott is seconded to the QGRC.

While at the helm of the QGRC, Scott will begin the all important recruitment process to find the club’s next CEO.

“I’ve told the committee I’ll have a shortlist of say three to four candidates by April-May for consideration,” Scott said.

Scott’s secondment to the QGRC comes with the full support of Queensland Government.

Dale Cartwright, who has served as a code director on the RQ Board for the past nine years, will assist Scott as a special advisor.

In announcing the move, Racing Queensland Chair Steve Wilson said the organisation’s support package demonstrated its unwavering commitment to the Queensland greyhound industry.

“The Q is a game changer for the Queensland greyhound industry,” Wilson said.

“We firmly believe it will be the best greyhound facility in the world, and with the project nearing its completion, there are a number of critical milestones that are fast approaching and Jason is best served to help deliver them from here.

“He will be strongly supported by Dale and the broader RQ team so we can commence trialling on all three tracks before our attentions turn to the first race meeting at the venue.

“It’s an incredibly exciting time for the code, nothing like The Q has ever been built, and we are well positioned to welcome greyhound enthusiasts from Queensland, Australia and across the globe.”
