The racing future of one-time fairytale horse Shelby Sixtysix is set to come under the microscope.

Chief steward Steve Railton warned trainer Danny Williams that stipes could consider if it’s suitable for the former The Galaxy winner to continue his racing career.

Railton stressed no decision would be made until Shelby Sixtysix is closely examined and tested by vets following his forgettable return in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes.

Jockey Alysha Collett was forced to ease Shelby Sixtysix out of the race before they’d even turned for home.

He was found to be 2/5 lame and there was blood present on his right hind bumper.

“We had a jockey that was concerned enough to ease him out of the race and he’s had documented issues,” Railton said.

“People on this side of the table respect you greatly as a horseman and a person.

“But I am going to put you on notice that stewards have got to give consideration on whether we are content to allow this horse to keep racing but we will only make a decision once we’ve got all the expert information in relation to the horse.”

Shelby Sixtysix hadn’t raced for close to 11 months before this preparation after requiring surgery to remove a tumour in his foot.

Williams, who had been hoping for a softer track for his return, was adamant Shelby Sixtysix had been giving every indication he was ready to return to his best.

“The horse has come up better than he ever has,” he said.

Shelby Sixtysix will undergo further tests in the coming days.
