The Southport School, a community recently toasting the recent milestones of old boys Hugo Burdon (Sheffield Shield debut) and Xavier Bartlett (international debut), were again the competition benchmark.

GPS FIRST XI TEAM OF THE DECADE - SO FAR

However IGS, under head coach Lachlan Pfeffer, were also unbeaten after three matches and were challenging hard with a nicely balanced side playing good team cricket.

There is still time for all First XI teams to mount a challenge, including Churchie who were also unbeaten with two wins and a tie.

Churchie went on and off the field five times last Saturday due to rain before getting the result against Nudgee.

The premiership ladder: 1. IGS (three wins), 2. TSS (three wins), 3. Churchie (two wins, tie), 4. BBC (one win, one lost, bye), 5. Terrace (one win, one tie, one lost), 6. TGS (one win, two lost), 7. BGS (two lost, one bye), 8, BSHS (two lost, one bye), 9. Nudgee (lost three).

TEAMS OF THE WEEK

ROUND 1 TEAM; PLUS 25 PLAYERS OF THE ROUND FROM 7As TO 11As

ROUND 2 TEAM; PLUS PLAYERS OF THE ROUND FROM 7As TO 11As

Players from both IGS and TSS were among the first chosen in our round 3 Team of the Week.

1. Dominic Black (TGS)

Black finished with a nice return given the pressure cooker atmosphere of playing The Southport School at home. He watched early wickets fall but kept his cool to reach 32, and with the ball did his best to wrestle momentum back with three wickets (9-1-42-3).

2. Blake Armstrong (BBC)

For a half an hour the flame flickered for BBC against IGS when left handed opener Armstrong blazed 37 from 34 balls before his dismissal. Although IGS attacked his left arm spin, he still managed 2-47 in a fine all around contribution.

3. Jacob Bath (TSS)

Bath (3-22) did not make our side for his batting, he made it for his opening bowling. One of the best players in the competition, Bath is never out of the game. His new ball spell rendered TGS 3-2 and the match was over.

4. Dinek Kinigama (IGS)

For the second week in a row Kinigama makes our Team of the Week. Don’t forget IGS were an uncertain 2-13 when he joined Rushi Kaddad at the crease, and his 65 not out saw Ipswich Grammar School to a safe score against Brisbane Boys College.

5. Rushi Kakkad (IGS)

Kaddad mustered a splendid 70 which was a part of a 123 partnership with Kinigama after an early hiccup. A year 11 student, Kaddad is a busy style of right handed batsman with the ability to play a full array of shots on both sides of the wicket.

6. Riley Johnson (TSS)

Johnson produced a dramatic captain’s innings, rallying his side from the loss of three early wickets to move quickly to 90 (105 balls). The team’s wicketkeeper, Johnson hit six fours and two sixes to push his side onto the downhill slop.

7. Oscar Bodimeade (Terrace)

Bodimeade is another gloveman who, during the Tav’s season at Norths, claimed most dismissals in the competition. But it was his 30 not out under pressure to get Terrace to its first win of the season which moved him into our round three Team of the Week. A naturally talented player, he shared an unbroken 53 run partnership with Harry DeSouza (18) and gave Terrace the win they thought they had seven days earlier when they tied with Churchie.

8. Tighe Morris (Churchie)

Morris is a tremendous contributor to the First XI scene and again he displayed his all around ability to ease to 52 not out in Churchie’s win over Nudgee, while also contributing at the bowling crease with his looping leg spin (1-15) in greasy conditions.

9. Elliot Quinn (Terrace)

He almost made the side and was desperately unlucky. Quinn bowled 7-1-18-2, but his two wickets were big scalps - BGS’s batting leader Sam Wallwork, and a defiant Lucas Bryan who was proving harder to remove than chewing gum stuck to the soles of your shoes.

10. Henry Hillier (Churchie)

It is important we don’t start taking Hillier’s high standards for granted. He again set standards during Churchie’s win in the wet against Nudgee after taking 3-22 from six overs with his left arm orthodox spin.

11. Luke Harper (IGS)

Another easy choice in our Team of the Week was Luke Harper - again. Against a quality Brisbane Boys College batting line up, off spinner Harper continued to enhance his reputation with 3-26.

Harry DeSouza comes into bowl for Terrace in round 2 against Churchie.

12. Harry DeSouza (Terrace)

He only scored 18 not not but in the context of the match - and given the disappointment of the previous week’s tie - DeSouza joined Bodimeade in deflecting pressure and delivering Terrace a much needed win. He also applied terrific pressure at the bowling crease with his left arm mediums, claiming 1-13 from six tidy overs.

13th man:Jacob Cibulka (IGS)

It was another big match for Ipswich Grammar School and, as a group, they responded splendidly to the challenge. Cibulka was on his game, taking 2-28 while also scoring a handy 26. He also snared a catch.

Special mentions

Charlie Lachmund (TGS)

Fast bowler Lachmund challenged the TSS batsmen early when he claimed ace Jacob Bath and recent century maker Jaxson Davies to have TSS 3-26. Then later in the innings Lachmund returned to grab a third wicket.

Gurnnor Singh Randhawa (Toowoomba Grammar School)

Again Randhawa tried to get his team’s innings going, scoring 32. His innings was worth more than that given it was against TSS at the Village Green.

Rishi Mehta (BGS)

Leg spinner Mehta played his part in a tense, low scoring thriller against Terrace, taking 2-19 including the big scalp of Theodore Bacalakis who was set after 52 balls at the crease.

Angus Storen (Churchie)

A valuable contributor, Storen had a good match in the rain affected clash with Nudgee, making 42 and taking 1-12. And Rupert Bignall (2-9) also deserves a mention from Churchie.

Ryan Summer (TSS)

Although he went without wickets, Summer contributed greatly by maintaining pressure at the start of the innings which complemented the wicket taking deeds of his teammate Jacob Bath, whom we mentioned earlier.

Lucas Bryan (BGS)

Bryan applied himself magnificently, batting for well over two hours to defy the Terrace attack before falling victim to the probing Elliot Quinn. He made 43 from 87 balls.

Tom Hallion (Terrace)

Terrace’s bowling unit was on song, with Hallion imposing himself on the BGS batting with two top order wickets. But it should be noted Samuel Jones (0-23, 10 overs), Theodore Bacalakis (1-24, 10 overs), James Eustance (0-17, nine oves) and Harry DeSouza (1-13) all contributed to the team’s success.
