Tiger Woods has been pictured on crutches for the first time since his horror car crash as he updated fans on his slow recovery.
The champion golfer posted a picture to Instagram early Saturday morning (AEDT), in which he appears alongside his dog, a Border Collie named Taz, with the crutches and his right leg in a cast and moon boot.
“My course is coming along faster than I am. But it’s nice to have a faithful rehab partner, man’s best friend,” Woods wrote in the caption accompanying the social media post.
It is the first glimpse of the 15-time major champion since he shattered his right leg in the single-car crash in California on February 23.
After the crash, Woods underwent hours of surgery to repair his lower leg and angle. He had a rod inserted into his shinbone and screws and pins fitted to stabilise the joint.
The crash gave rise to fears his celebrated career could be over, but his beaming smile and cheerful nature in the photo and post indicate that is the furthest thing from his mind.
The Los Angeles County’s Sheriff revealed earlier this month, that Woods was driving at an “unsafe” speed nearly double the 72km/h limit when he crashed.
Woods’s SUV was travelling at up to 140 kilometres an hour before it flew off the road and flipped several times during the accident in Ranchos Palos Verdes.
“The primary causal factor for this traffic collision was driving at a speed unsafe for the road conditions and the inability to negotiate the curve of the roadway,” said Alex Villanueva.
“Estimated speeds at the first area of impact were 84 to 87 miles per hour.”
There were “no signs of impairment,” or evidence of any “distracted driving,” and Woods voluntarily allowed the results of the investigation to be made public, officials said.
Woods, 45, may have inadvertently hit the gas instead of the brakes upon losing control, Captain James Powers said, although Woods himself does not recall the incident.
Officials denied the champion athlete had received any special treatment.
Woods has been recovering at home in Florida but the new photo indicates he has been spending time at his public access course, Payne’s Valley Golf Course, in the Ozarks in Missouri.
The course is named after late professional golfer Payne Stewart, who died in a plane crash in South Dakota in 1999.
