Tiger Woods’ camp slams ‘salacious’ documentary examining sex life and affairs

Tiger Woods’ camp has come out swinging after a documentary diving into the golfer’s private life and affairs finally hit TV screens.

Tiger Woods’ agent isn’t pleased about HBO’s documentary Tiger, calling the look into his client’s life “unauthorised and salacious”.

Mark Steinberg, Woods’ agent, released a statement to Golf Digest regarding the documentary and said: “Just like the book it is based off of, the upcoming HBO documentary is just another unauthorised and salacious outsider attempt to paint an incomplete portrait of one of the greatest athletes of all-time.”

A biography written in 2018, Tiger Woods, provided the origin of the documentary. One of the book’s authors, Armen Keteyian, is an executive producer of the HBO documentary, which premiered this week.

The documentary, like the book, examines Woods’ relationship with his late father, Earl, his downfall, his sex life and affairs and his recent career turnaround.

It’s based on interviews done with people who have fallen out of favour with the 45-year-old Woods, including ex-caddie Steve Williams and former mistress Rachel Uchitel — described by the filmmaker as the “woman at the centre of the sex scandal that forever altered Tiger’s world”.

Uchitel has been doing the publicity rounds in the lead-up to the documentary’s release, and said recently her life has been a “living hell” since news of Woods’ scandalous infidelity was made public.

Explaining why she is breaking her silence 10 years after Woods’ ex-wife Elin Nordegren was seen chasing him out of their house with a golf club upon discovering their affair, Uchitel told Extra: “I have been silent for over a decade now, and I felt that it was really important to me to speak only once in my life, because I have spent all these years letting people think what they want to think and say what they want to say.

Woods’ private life draws as much attention as his golf.

Uchitel says she doesn’t deserve to be vilified.

“I needed to take the shackles off and be able tell my story for me. I have spent years under the shame of what’s been going on.

“One moment doesn’t define your life … And I don’t like to be branded as a mistress. I don’t like to be branded as a homewrecker — that’s not who I am. I’m a 45-year-old woman. I made one wrong turn 10 years ago.

“I didn’t throw somebody down the stairs. I didn’t kill someone. I made a mistake. Everybody makes mistakes,”

The 45-year-old said she’s felt “shame” for having an affair with a married man but “that’s for me to deal with” and does not feel it was fair to be vilified by the media and public.

“One moment doesn’t define your life … And I don’t like to be branded as a mistress,” Uchitel said. “I don’t like to be branded as a homewrecker — that’s not who I am.

“I’m a 45-year-old woman. I made one wrong turn 10 years ago … I didn’t throw somebody down the stairs. I didn’t kill someone. I made a mistake. Everybody makes mistakes.

“I wanted people to see what really happened. I was not a mistress, and I was in a real relationship, and I want people to leave me alone about it. I made a bad decision.

“I regret it, and I’m embarrassed about it and … my apology is to two people, not the world, two people.”

Woods’ relationships will be dissected in more detail in part two of the documentary, which airs next week.
