Paige Spiranac’s cheeky shot at Masters flop Bryson DeChambeau

Paige Spiranac has added to the misery of Bryson DeChambeau, whose plans to dominate the Masters went up in flames.

US Open winner Bryson DeChambeau barely made the cut after the second round of the Masters – and Paige Spiranac enjoyed every minute of it.

DeChambeau, who many feared would overwhelm Augusta National with his power-driving game, barely avoided a humiliating early exit after a two-over 74, making the record-low Masters cut of par 144 on the number.

The 27-year-old, who spoke before the tournament about experimenting with a 48-inch driver - the longest permissible club length at Augusta - began well enough with a two-under par 70 first round.

But the wheels fell off on Saturday, including one comical moment on the third where he couldn’t find his ball.

Spiranac, who has aimed barbs at the golf beefcake in the past, couldn’t resist taking a shot.

“Hitting it really far is all fun and games until you’re hitting it really far off line,” she tweeted, before branding DeChambeau “deshambles”.

But she got even cheekier with her next effort: “Lesson learned from Bryson this week guys. It’s not how long your shaft is but how you use it.”

Spiranac, a former pro golfer, began her war on the Californian after he blew up at an official earlier this year.

“I used to be a big Bryson fan. I was all in on Bryson … I thought he was doing things that were different, innovative and he is who he is, and I respect that,” Spiranac said on an episode of her podcast Playing-A-Round.

“But in the last few weeks it’s been really hard to be a Bryson fan. He’s crossed that line from being different to being a d**k.

“The way he acted to that rules official was so uncalled for and I think it just shows where his headspace is at right now, where he thinks that he is literally pioneering the way that golf is being played, and he is so far and beyond everyone else that he can tell a rules official, whose job is to know the rules inside and out … ‘I don’t believe you, I need a second ruling’.

“Who do you think you are? Seriously, who do you think you are?

“You know the rules for OB (out of bounds). We have played it from junior golf to college golf to pro golf. It has never changed.”

But she tipped her cap to him when he secured his first major win at this year’s US Open.

“It’s fun to give Bryson s**t at times but you have to give him so much credit for sticking to his guns despite all the hate and now he gets to call himself a US Open Champion. Well deserved win,” she tweeted.

It would take a miracle for him to repeat the effort at Augusta, where he just hasn’t looked right.

Sixth-ranked DeChambeau said he underwent a COVID-19 test after feeling dizzy on the course Friday.

“I don’t know what was going on, a little something weird. So I got checked for Covid last night and I was fine, nothing,” DeChambeau said.

“I don’t know what it is or what happened, but these past couple days, I’ve felt really odd, just not 100 per cent. Some of that has played into it. I just feel kind of dull and numb out there, just not fully aware of everything and making some silly mistakes.”

DeChambeau is nine shots back of a lead group of five players, including Australia’s Cameron Smith, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Jon Rahm and Abraham Ancer.

Tiger Woods is four off the lead as he attempts to defend his title from last year.
