Paige Spiranac spoke out Sunday evening amid backlash she received over a tweet following Hideki Matsuyama’s historic Masters win.
Spiranac, who had been tuning into the tournament all weekend long, first congratulated Matsuyama on Sunday after he became the first Japanese golfer to win a men’s major.
The “Playing A Round” podcast host then remarked, “The menu for the champions dinner is going to be absolute fire next year,” which some commenters dubbed as “racist.”
Spiranac immediately addressed her comments, noting how “it’s disgusting how everything gets twisted.”
“I made a comment about how amazing the menu will be next year because I love Japanese food. Most winners create menus to honour where they are from and I would expect Hideki to do the same,” Spiranac said.
When one follower replied, “This isn’t your 1st tweet lol … you know the trolls are ready to pounce on anything …. and IT will be a top notch menu next year for sure !!”
Spiranac then stated, “I don’t care if someone calls me a slut but to be called a racist is uncalled me [sic]. I would never and I’m honestly so upset about this.”
Ahead of the Masters, the reigning champion traditionally hosts past winners for a dinner with a menu he’s curated.
Last year’s champ, Dustin Johnson, served pigs in a blanket and filet mignon, among other choices. Australia’s Adam Scott included pavlova when he hosted the dinner.
Matsuyama finished this year’s tournament at 10-under par.
