Jordan Spieth disqualified from PGA Tour event over rookie error

The former world No. 1 has been disqualified from this week’s PGA Tour event over a mistake that would embarrass a club golfer.

Jordan Spieth’s run at the Genesis Invitational came to an end in quite the unexpected way.

The three-time major winner was disqualified from the tournament on Friday (Saturday AEDT) after he incorrectly signed a scorecard during the second round.

The issue at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles came on the par-3 fourth hole when he signed for a 3, as the New York Post reports.

The issue was, though, that Spieth actually had finished the hole with four shots.

Spieth acknowledged the mistake on social media.

“Today, I signed for an incorrect scorecard and stepped out of the scoring area, after thinking I went through all procedures to make sure it was correct,” Spieth wrote on Instagram.

“Rules are rules and I take full responsibility. I love this tournament and golf course as much as any on (the) PGA TOUR so it hurts to not have a run at the weekend. Really appreciated the support in LA.”

He started the tournament near the top of the pack by shooting a five-under 66 in the first round but struggled more on day 2 with a two-over 73 before he was bounced from play.

But Spieth was not the only one with an early exit on Friday.

After teeing off on the seventh hole, Woods was carted off the course by a rules official and his day was done.

Rob McNamara, Woods’ business partner, released a statement about an hour and half after the golfer’s exit, attributing the departure to worsening symptoms that had developed on Thursday.

“He started feeling some flu-like symptoms last night,” McNamara said.

“Woke up this morning, they were worse than the night previous.

“He had a little bit of a fever and that, and was better during the warm-up, but then when he got out there and was walking and playing, he started feeling dizzy.

“Ultimately the doctors are saying he’s got some … potentially some type of flu and that he was dehydrated.

“He’s been treated with an IV bag and he’s doing much, much better and he’ll be released on his own here soon.’’

It was Woods’ first full-field PGA Tour event since last year’s Masters before he needed surgery on his right foot.

Patrick Cantlay (14-under par) currently leads the tournament heading into the final round, two shots ahead of Will Zalatoris and Xander Schauffele.

Aussie Jason Day is in a tie for fifth at 10-under.
