Chad Ramey put four balls in the water at the Memorial Tournament on one hole

One ball in the water can be a mistake and even two can happen, but there was nothing to compare to Chad Ramey’s final hole in Ohio.

In March, Chad Ramey was the opening round leader at The Players Championship.

On Friday morning, the American went the other way and closed his opening round at the $30m Memorial Tournament with an unforgettable 13 after putting four shots in the water in his very own “Tin Cup” moment.

The staggering collapse occurred on his final hole, the ninth, at Muirfield Village Golf Club and came after a perfect shot off the tee found the middle of the fairway.

But from less than 100m to the green, things went completely haywire.

Ramey put his first approach in the water at the front of the green, dropped his ball for a fourth shot a little further up the fairway and did exactly the same thing again.

Twice more Ramey dropped a ball and, with less than 50m to the green, put them both in the water.

It was reminiscent of Kevin Costner’s portrayal of flawed pro Roy McAvoy, who did the same thing on a fictional final hole of the US Open in the cult movie.

After four attempts, Ramey finally found the green but three-putted, including missing a 1m putt for a 12. Instead, he walked off with a 13, including four penalty strokes.

Ramey’s 13 was the highest score on the ninth hole in tournament history.

His first-round 88 was also the highest score at the Memorial Tournament since Larry Mize carded the same score in the second round in 2008.

His 16-over score left him dead last and 21 shots from leader Davis Riley.

Ramey wasn’t the only player to collapse late, with Rory McIlroy closing with a triple-bogey seven, although he still carded an ever-par round of 72.

Adam Scott was the best-placed Australian after carding an opening round of two-under.
