Aussie golfer Jason Day has sent social media into a frenzy after he turned heads at the US Masters with several bold fashion statements.

It wasn’t just the play at Augusta National that fuelled internet chatter Thursday.

The NY Post reports Australian golfer Jason Day became a viral sensation over his attire for the opening round of the 2024 Masters, namely his slacks that were likened to “parachute pants” on social media.

“The Masters, a tradition unlike any other,’ Jason Day wearing MC Hammer pants,” one golf fan quipped on X.

Another user joked, “Hey Jason Day, @MCHammer called and wants his pants back …”

The jokes kept rolling about Day, whose Masters looks have been crafted by Malbon, “a lifestyle brand inspired by the game of golf,” for which he serves as an ambassador.

“I’m legitimately concerned that Jason Day might set sail with those pants in this wind,” Trey Wingo posted alongside a video of Day as his pants moved in the breeze.

He added: “How many actual golfers could fit in Jason Day’s pants?”

Day continued to drive social media commentary when he arrived for Day 2 of the Masters wearing a sweater vest featuring bold detailing.

One fan said on X: “He looks like a pack of cigarettes.”

“Is someone making Jason Day dress like this? I feel like he’s being pranked,” Barstool Sports’ Dan “Big Cat” Katz wrote on X.

Longtime CBS broadcaster Verne Lundquist said in commentary: “Jason seems determined to make a fashion statement. Unusual pants yesterday and a billboard for a shirt today.”

Day had a late start to the day on Thursday night (AEST) as stormy weather in the Augusta, Georgia, area pushed back tee times by more than two hours.

His group of Tiger Woods and Max Homa began later in the afternoon and had to complete the first round early on Friday morning local time before starting the second round.

Day is four-over through two rounds, enough to make the cut and ensure he can show off more bold outfits over the weekend.

The 2015 PGA Championship winner, Day had his best finish at the Masters in 2011 when he tied for second with fellow Australian Adam Scott.

Fellow Australians Cameron Davis (3-under) and Cameron Smith (1-under) are still in the hunt for Australia’s first Masters triumph since Scott won in 2013.

American trio Bryson DeChambeau, Scottie Scheffler and Homa are joint leaders at 6-under.
