Adam Scott has entered US Open qualifying after a rankings slip put his streak of 91-majors in doubt

A streak stretching back to 2001 is in jeopardy for the Australian star who knows what he has to do to keep it alive.

Playing partners Adam Scott and Tiger Woods both missed the cut at the PGA Championship in Kentucky last week but the fallout was more dire for the Australian veteran whose streak of playing in 91 consecutive major championships is now at risk.

Scott, 43, dropped to 62 on the world rankings, putting him outside the top 60 for the first time in a long time and outside the number to automatically qualify for next month’s US Open at Pinehurst.

The Aussie veteran has put his name down for qualifying events to try and keep his run alive, but also knows top-10 finish in Texas this week could go a long way to helping his cause ahead of the June 10 cut-off. 

Scott made his major championship debut at the British Open in 2000, and his played his second the year after and has featured in every one of them since 2001 with 18 top-10 finishes including his famous Masters victory in 2013.

“Yeah, I had a disappointing last week at the PGA. The state of my game had been pretty solid all around, but I struggled on the greens last week and I have struggled on the greens the two previous weeks before that. So that’s really held me back.,” Scott said ahead of the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth.

“I think my game is in better shape than results are showing. I know pretty much everyone who is not in the top 10 in the world is probably saying that, but that’s how I feel.
“I hope that some good karma from this golf course kind of inspires a few better things for me on the golf course this week.”

Scott, who finished tied for 22nd at the Masters as evidence he can still compete with the world’s best, is back in familiar territory to help his quest, having win in Forth Worth in 2014.

He’s also the only player to win all four of the annual PGA Tour stops in Texas and said he has always felt comfortable playing in the Lone Star State adamant it’s the “most like Australia”.

“I’ve always felt that the state of Texas is most like Australia generally, from the trees to the golf courses are similar in a lot of ways,” Scott said.

“The people, I wouldn’t call all Australians cowboys, but we definitely have a lot of cowboys as well.

“I think there’s always been a level of comfort, and I have enjoyed success on the golf course here. It also makes it a great week every time I come back to play in Texas.”

Scott was world No.1 when won the 2014 tournament at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, but is back at the event for the first time since 2018.
