Mixed pairs event in golf at LA Olympics could allow Min Woo Lee and Minjee Lee to play together

They became the first brother and sister duo to play golf at the Olympics and now Australia’s star siblings could play together in a new event in LA.

Masters Week: Can Min Woo Lee Challenge Scheffler at Augusta?

Min Woo Lee says he’ll push his superstar sister Minjee Lee to play on for at least four more years so they can team up at the LA Olympics.

The International Olympic Committee this week confirmed the addition of a mixed golf event to the schedule, paving the way for the star duo to go for gold together.

Both Lees represented Australia at the Paris Olympics, Min Woo for the first time, Minjee for the third time, but played in separate events.

But after completing his opening round of 1-under 71 at the US Masters, Min Woo, now Australia’s highest-ranked player, said he hoped his 28-year-old, two-time major wining sister was still going strong in four years time so they could play as a pair.

“That would be very cool,” Min Woo said.

“When I saw it, I was thinking, is my sister going to play another four years, and I’m pretty sure I will be, but it would be very cool.

“I would love to team up with her and give it all we got.”

Golf returned to the Olympic program at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games after a 112-year absence, and it has stuck to the tour model of 72-hole stroke play events, one for the men and one for the women.

But amid lobbying by the International Golf Federation, and players, for a mixed-team competition, LA officials opted to include the third competition in between the men’s and women’s individual events.

“The International Golf Federation is thrilled with the IOC executive board’s decision to approve the addition of a mixed-team event to the Olympic golf program,” the IGF said in a statement.

While details of how the event would run are to be confirmed, it’s understood the men’s competition would start on Wednesday – one day earlier than before – and end on Saturday.

The mixed teams would then be held over two days, Sunday and Monday, with foursomes (alternate shot) used for one round and four balls (better ball) the other.

There would be a day’s break, then the women’s event would be held.

Golf is set to be played at Riviera Country Club, which is hosting the US Women’s Open for the first time in 2026.

It’s unclear how many teams would compete in the mixed event and the qualification process, but it opens the door for the Lees, who both competed at the Paris Games, to play as a duo.

Min Woo broke through for his first PGA Tour win in Houston before heading to the Masters, while older sister Minjee is a two-time major champion.
