Danes claim inaugural Duggan-Sutton Shield in 16-point victory

For the first time, the Jack Duggan — Gary Sutton Shield was contested between great rivals Wattles Warriors and the Pittsworth Danes.
The shield, awarded to the winner, is set to become an annual affair and will no doubt be the source of bragging-rights in years to come.
Named after legends and stalwarts of their respective clubs – Duggan for Wattles and Sutton for Danes – the shield honours both men who have been invaluable to their club and the rugby league community.
“Gary (Sutton) played for us for about 15 to 20 years,” Pittswoth Danes president Greg Quinn said.
“He’s won a few premierships and also won one in his last season (1986).
“Gary was also a coach, and an administrator for the club for many years and has been a huge part of our history.”
In a 32-16 point scoreline, the shield was taken out by Pittsworth in what was a tightly contested match up until the final 15 minutes.
“It was really close at 20-16 with about 15 minutes to go,” Quinn said.
“The boys then added 12-points in the last five minutes to finish with a comfortable win.”
Very pleased with the result and the performances from a number of players, Quinn stressed that Danes still needed everything to “go their way” if they were to rise from their current sixth place on the ladder and make the finals.
“Both Mitch (Revell) and Brenton (Clement) had great games for us and really stood up in not just attack but defence as well,” Quinn said.
“The win is big for our hopes of playing finals but due to the changed format of the finals, now points differential instead of knockout, we’ll need a lot to go right for us with other games.
“We’ve got Brothers next who played well against Warwick, then Dalby away and Southern Suburbs Tigers who beat us earlier in the season, which means we’ll need to defend well and score as many as we can.”
The Danes will play Brothers in their round 16 clash this Sunday, August 6 at Glenhome Park, Toowoomba with kick-off at 6.30pm.
