Socceroos great Tim Cahill has urged EPL giant Tottenham to back the under fire Ange Postecoglou, declaring that he can ‘deliver on the pitch but also deliver off the pitch.’

Australia’s greatest Socceroo, Tim Cahill, has urged English Premier League giants Tottenham to stick with coach Ange Postecoglou, amid growing speculation his position is under threat.

For now, Spurs are standing by Postecoglou, who has a wretched second season in the EPL after a horror injury run that has sidelined most of best players.

But already there are growing calls for changes with Tottenham languishing at 14th place on the ladder and with only one remaining chance of salvaging some silverware this season after reaching the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

There are daily reports coming out of Britain about other managers lining up to take his spot, but Cahill said Postecoglou had done a great job and proven he can overcome and thrive in pressure situations.

“Seeing what he’s done, some of the results, beating some of the top teams, yeah, you always go through sticky patches but I don’t think he’ll be phased,” Cahill told this masthead.

“I just think it’s the global media and the pressure of what comes with being a Premier League manager, an Australian Premier League manager.

“I always look at the positives because he’s got the hot seat and you know you get all these questions asked of you.

“That’s where you want to be. You want that shot at the title, you want the pressure and I know that he absorbs it really well.”

Cahill played all over the world during his amazing career, including eight seasons in the Premier League with Everton, scoring 56 goals.

He also played in four World Cups but says he rates Postecoglou as one of the best coaches he ever worked with.

“We had an amazing time together as part of a project about creating an identity, style of play, qualifying for a World Cup, winning an Asian Cup,” he said.

“It was really refreshing for me as a player, being older and being one of the guys that helped me mentor the players and also mentor the group and be around us.

“He was not only someone that could deliver on the pitch but also deliver off the pitch.”

Cahill said he knows Postecoglou’s management style is different to other coaches but he also knows from first hand experience that his methods work as long as he’s given enough time.

“I’m proud of him. Australian Premier League manager, it’s a dream that I know that he wanted to fulfil and he has the opportunity,” Cahill said.

“He’s really, really focused on his way of playing. He’s not negotiable.

“I played under him, so I feel I know and I understand the journey that they’re on, and it’s going to be a long one and a tough one.

“He’s had some amazing results already. A good first season, his second season has been a little bit difficult, but that’s life in football.”
