Matildas defender Wini Heatley is set to sign with a new club in the aftermath of her player of the match performance for Australia.

“I’m heading back over to Denmark to play for FC Nordsjælland where I’ve been for the past three years, but then I’ll be looking to head somewhere new,” Heatley said.

“It’s still to be confirmed at this stage, I’m not actually allowed to say where just yet.

“It’ll probably be announced in the next week or so.”

The comments came in the aftermath of her player of the match performance in the side’s 1-1 draw with Slovenia on Sunday.

She also lifted the lid on how she’s adjusting to the side’s new head coach Joe Montemurro.

“I really like Joe, so far we’ve been playing a really nice brand of football,” she said.

“It was only a short time that I got to spend with (the squad), but it looks good.

“As a team we’re moving the ball a lot better. We’re playing a more possession-based style of game which is giving it a bit more purpose.

“I’m really enjoying it.

“The result itself was a hard one to stomach.

‘Being up 1-0 and holding a clean sheet all the way into stoppage time only to concede is never want you want as a defender.”

After the match at Perth’s HBF Park, Heatley jetted across to her hometown in Cairns, spending some time with the next crop of juniors at her old club, Marlin Coast Rangers FC.

“It’s lovely being home, I have all my family here so it’s always a special time,” she said.

“When I was here playing at Marlin Coast there was only the one girls team, so it’s been wild to see the number of different players across different age brackets that are here training.

“I had some time to sit with the girls and chat, and I mainly just wanted to open it up and let them ask me any questions they may have had.

“Growing up in FNQ, I didn’t have the female role models around that I could see doing what I wanted to do.

“I want to be that for them. I got some funny questions, but some meaningful ones as well about how I go with having new coaches all the time.

“That’s a deep question that people at a high level struggle with all the time because the game so subjective and every coach is going to have a different opinion of you.”
