Marquee man Douglas Costa has immediately lifted the intensity at Sydney FC

New A-League star Douglas Costa has wasted little time in setting a new standard at Sydney FC.

After just one training session with his new club, Brazilian star Douglas Costa has already lifted the standards at Sydney FC.

Signed last week by the Sky Blues in a huge boost for the entire A-League, the 33-year-old former Juventus and Bayern Munich winger was officially unveiled by the Sydney club on Monday.

“For me it’s going to be a new challenge,” marquee man Costa said.

“Day by day we’re going to learn from each other.”

Earlier in the day, it was very much Costa’s new teammates that were learning from him on the training paddock, according to Sky Blues coach Ufuk Talay.

“One thing that was very distinct today was his presence at training, which definitely lifted the intensity with the boys, and they stepped up another level,” Talay said.

“For me as a head coach, now it’s to get him right and to get him ready, and I'm looking forward to getting him on the park hopefully in our first (AFC) Champions League Two game at home (on September 19 against Hong Kong outfit Eastern SC).”

Costa intends to play an attractive brand of football that will attract plenty of fans to Sydney FC games.

“I hope I can play good football for them (the supporters) because then they’re going to come more often, and then I’ll be happy as well,” he said.

“I’m really happy to be here.”

Sydney FC chairman Scott Barlow said the Sky Blues were “proud” to bring Costa to the A-League.

“We think he can make a major contribution to what we want to achieve at Sydney FC, which is to continue to win titles,” Barlow said.

“He has a number of years ahead of him still of top-flight football, and it’s exciting to bring him to these shores.

“Douglas is just the latest in a long list here at Sydney FC of major signings from around the world.”
