A missed penalty has proved costly for Brisbane Roar in their 2-1 loss to the Newcastle Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Chasing consecutive wins on Thursday night after a 3-0 weekend home victory over Western Sydney Wanderers, the Roar were beaten for the fifth time in nine A-League matches this season.

Fortune favoured the Jets in wet and windy conditions, with the hosts going ahead in the 22nd minute via an own goal from Roar goalkeeper Macklin Freke.

Freke’s misfortune came after Newcastle’s Savvas Siatravanis unleashed with a shot that hit base of the post.

The rebound fell favourably for the Jets, with the ball hitting the outstretched arm of Freke before rolling into the back of the net.

The Roar blew a golden chance to equalise 15 minutes later when they were awarded a penalty after Jets midfielder Angus Thurgate pulled down Nikola Mileusnic in the box.

VAR intervention was needed before referee Jonathan Barreiro pointed to the spot.

However, Irishman Jay O’Shea, who continues to captain the Roar in the ongoing absence of regular skipper Tom Aldred, hit the post with his penalty strike.

Brisbane grabbed a deserved equaliser in the 64th minute went Argentine substitute Juan Lescano scored his first A-League goal with a shot that deflected off Jets defender Jordan Elsey and wrong-footed goalkeeper Jack Duncan on its way to the net.

But Brisbane’s joy was short-lived, with Newcastle regaining the lead six minutes later via a blistering strike from Thurgate, who was afforded far too much space outside the Roar’s penalty area.

The Jets second win of the season moved them to ninth place on the A-League ladder and ahead of the Roar on goal difference.
