“I SAY to myself: ‘Never give up.’”
These words are spoken by 11-year-old Samuel, who has a huge passion for football.
He also has cerebral palsy, a physical disability that affects a person’s ability to move. But this has definitely not crushed the young man’s sporting dreams.
Samuel is the goalie in his Year 7 school team at Manchester Creative and Media Academy in Blackley — a partner school of Manchester United Foundation.
His coach wanted to reward Samuel for his dedication to the team and overall positive approach to life.
And what a reward it was. In fact, Samuel describes it as the “best day of his life”.
He was given the chance to meet his Manchester United idols, including two of his favourites — Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
And the surprises didn’t stop there. Manchester’s very own goalkeeper, David de Gea, gave him his goalie gloves as a gift.
“De Gea gave me his actual gloves, which was better than anything I have ever got.”
The English football club was so inspired by the 11-year-old’s story that they’ve made a video for the whole world to see called ‘United and Samuel’.
“Having cerebral palsy is very hard, and playing football is a bit difficult but I don’t really take that as a big issue, I just get on with it,” Samuel says in the video. And this is what makes him a hero.
“I’m in a wheelchair and I never give up. Just try. Try your hardest.”
You’re a star, Samuel.
