Fan favourite and promising young footballer Izaack Powell has revealed he has been battling Leukaemia since June.
He attended Grace Lutheran College at Rothwell, north of Brisbane, and juggled his playing and training commitments with school.
The left-back announced on Instagram that he had been battling the disease since June.
“It’s been a challenging few months being told I had Leukaemia back in June, but I’ve been quite fortunate with how everything has gone since then,” Powell wrote.
“I wanna say a big thank you to my family, friends and my girlfriend who have supported me so far and I can’t wait to finish my treatment and return back to normality in the coming months.”
Powell said he wouldn’t have reached this point of his treatment with the “generosity of blood donors across Australia”.
“I’ve needed multiple transfusions of not only red blood but also other blood products such as platelets and plasma,” he shared on social media.
Playing football professionally has been a dream of Powell’s since he first took up the sport as a junior. Playing first for Peninsula Power at Redcliffe and then Moreton Bay Jets before joining the Brisbane Roar Youth Sqaud.
He played six A-League matches in 2019 and four in the 2019-2020 season.
Powell toured to Brazil for the under-17 World Cup in 2019 where he played in all of the Joey’s matches.
Brisbane Roar will play a pre-season game against Adelaide United at North Ipswich Reserve on October 31.
