IF THIS is the taunting Matt Barnes gets in Indianapolis, imagine the reception when he gets to New York.
Barnes, the infamous Grizzlies forward, was serenaded with chants of “Der-ek Fish-er” while at the free-throw line during Friday’s road game against the Pacers.
In early October, Barnes drove in a rage to confront Fisher when he found out the Knicks coach was romancing Barnes’ estranged wife, Gloria Govan, at Barnes’ former marital residence in southern California. The argument between Barnes and Fisher turned physical, and the NBA is investigating the brawl.
“Barnes went crazy. He got in his car and went to the house and went after Fisher,” a source told The New York Post at the time. “Matt then drove down there to beat the s*** out of him.”
The source added: “Barnes was in Santa Barbara (at Memphis Grizzlies training camp) and heard that Fisher was in his house. He went crazy. He got in his car and went to the house and went after Fisher.”
Pacers fans, some trained in antagonism from their glory-days battles with the Knicks, were all too happy to twist the proverbial knife.
Barnes — who played with Fisher at the Lakers — made headlines recently when he told TMZ that he and pop star Rihanna were “just past the crush stage”, and Rihanna fired back that she’d never met the player.
Barnes has had trouble with the law in the past: He was arrested in 2010 on suspicion of domestic violence but he disputed the charges, and again in 2012 on a misdemeanour traffic warrant.
Govan said this year of her impending divorce from Barnes: “Matt and I were together for eight years. And I think the course of our relationship is just due to evolution. We’re always gonna be good friends. Obviously we have kids together.”
To answer the natural question: February 5. That’s when the Grizzlies visit MSG to tackle Fisher’s Knicks. Parental guidance suggested — some material may not be suitable for children.
