Round 3 of GPS First XI cricket see’s TSS and IGS setting the pace

Ipswich Grammar School continued to shadow First XI premiership pacesetters The Southport School after stretching its unbeaten run to three matches.

TSS successfully defended 8-220 against TGS after skipper Riley Johnson’s thunderous 90, ensuring TSS’ lofty standing in the competition, while IGS (6-220) were just as impressive against BBC (122).

In other matches, Terrace’s Oscar Bodimeade was a batting hero for his exciting, unbroken 53 run partnership with Harry DeSouza (18) who pushed their side (5-128) to victory in a rain interrupted match against BGS (6-127).

At Churchie, the home side batted first to make 5-140 against Nudgee (5-74) before the rain swept in.

And in As highlights, BBC’s Oliver Hottot (6-27, 6.4 overs) shone in the 11s, as did Nudgee’s Thomas Bayo 72 (76 balls) and TSS’s Thomas Barnes’ 83. More on all the 7As-11As later in this story.

In Ipswich in the First XI, Rushi Kakkad (70) and Dinek Kinigama (65 not out) were batting aces in the pack, while spinner Luke Harper (3-26) again impressed.

IGS were a serious bowling and batting unit this season, with William Parmenter (2-9) again setting the standard, supported by Josh Lossberg (1-18), Jacob Cibulka (2-28) and Jettison Emmerson (2-36).

There was a fleeting moment for BBC when Blake Armstrong (37, 34 balls) was at the crease, but Harper’s dismissal of him felled the batting group.

IGS were an uncertain 2-13 when they batted first, but Kaddad and Kinigama added 123 to set up the innings.

Cibulka also scored a handy 26, and coupled with a catch and two wickets, he had a big day one for IGS.

GPS FIRST XI PLAYERS TO WATCH THIS SEASON

It is the second successive week Kinigama has stood tall and straight for IGS.

On the Village Green, TSS captain and keeper Riley Johnson was also a batting ace. Batting at No. 5, he rallied after the early loss of three wickets to plunder 90 (105) with six fours and two sixes.

Cameron Sinfield (27) batted around him, as did Dushyant Thaman (29) and while it was a pity he did not score a century, Johnson will take 90 every day of the week.

In the end TSS’s score ballooned over 200 as Ted Waterman (23, 10 balls) and Ryan Summers (16, 10 balls) slapped the bowling around.

I am afraid TSS were never going to lose defending 220 on their home pitch, particularly after Jacob Bath twice struck in his first over.

Bath then took a third wicket and TGS were 3-2 and despite efforts by Black (32), Donges (28) and Singh Randhawa (32), TGS could only muster 9-141.

There was no shame in the defeat, TGS were just beaten by a better side.

While Bath took the figures (3-22), Summers kept things tight early on when the game was won and lost.

At Northgate, the rain had a say for a while, but Terrace had the final word with an exciting win over BGS.

It came down to gloveman Bodimeade (30 not out) batting more than an hour and a half alongside DeSouza (18 not out) who crept up on the victory target to give their side its first win of the season.

Well done to both boys who came together at 5-75, and with the ghosts of round 2 swirling around, they defied the pressure to get the job done.

BGS played their role in an exciting game, with Rishi Mehta taking 2-19, Henry Mercer (1-19) and Eli Brain (1-26) during their 10 over efforts at the bowling crease.

In the BGS innings, Lucas Bryan top scored with a well crafted 43 (87 balls), while Cruz Baker (16, 57 balls) put value on his wicket.

Terrace’s six bowlers should all take a collective bow. Tom Hallion (2-29), Elliot Quinn (2-18), Samuel Jones (0-23, 10 overs), Theodore Bacalakis (1-24), James Eustance (0-17, nine overs) and Harry DeSouza (1-13) bowled beautifully together.

At Churchie, Tighe Morris impacted the match with a lovely 52 not out (80 balls) in a rain affected affair claimed by Churchie.

He and Angus Storen (42) held the Nudgee bowling at arm’s length despite Angus McLean’s bold eight overs (0-13), Jacob Turner’s two wickets and Billy Connellan’s application (1-26).

In the Nudgee innings, they had the worst of the weather and as a result only made 6-81, while Churchie pair Henry Hillier (2-21) and Rupert Bignall (2-9) making inroads. Morris also snared 1-15.

In 7As, IGS’s Connor Stone scored 55 (99 balls) to almost bat through his team’s innings, setting up a seven wicket win for the home side.

Sohind Singh Rauke’s 39 not out was an excellent contribution in the match.

Churchie’s Archie Jackson claimed 3-11 in an outstanding team performance against Nudgee, whose top score was a defiant Oliver Abdy (27, 70 balls). Churchie’s Carter Teys had earlier scored 22 featuring four fours.

TGS’s win was set up by Finlay Lockwood’s 47 (65 balls) and Thomas Bernoth’s 58 (43 balls), with Bernoth hitting eight fours and a six.

This was despite TSS’s Jordan Holland (3-9) stemming the tide.

BGS’s Sebastian Sneddon claimed 3-18 after Terrace’s William Stewart had scored well, and despite Terrace’s Donald Mackenzie returning serve with the ball to snare 3-13, it was BGS who won.

In 8As, BGS pair Aamay Wadhwani (33, 47 balls) and Lewis Carroll (38, 37 balls) scored quickly, and despite Angus Trikamji’s haul of 3-11, BGS won.

Terrace’s best bat was Charles Spurgin, the captain who batted through the innings to make 52 not out (80 balls).

IGS had an impressive win, with Asrush Sharma (41), Aarav Dev (46 not out) and Josiah Pearce (46 not out) recovering their team’s innings. Pearce faced just 35 balls.

BGS’s highest score was Sidney Dawson (32 not out).

Nudgee College had a thrilling, narrow win over Churchie.

Nicolas Gazzard (32) helped set a target for Churchie, with Pandle (20) and Scammells (22) boosting the tally despite Zac Zillman’s 3-20.

Chasing hard was Abhay Dhaliwal (59 not out) who got his team home after Carter Thompson had made 28 at the start.

There was another tight match won by TGS over TSS. Lachlan Pask top scored for TSS with 25.

TGS put a team batting performance together, with Iskcon Gyawali top scoring with 25.

In the 9As, Terrace beat BGS on the back of Leo Crombie’s outstanding 6-13 from 6.5 overs. Now that’s a bowling performance.

BGS’s Harry Weibgen (26) stood up to him for a long while before Samuel Robba trapped him LBW.

When Terrace batted, Thomas Nasser (30) and Jackson McDonald (23) ensured the path to victory was a smooth one.

BBC had a big win over IGS, with Oliver Tesoriero making 63 (74 balls). IGS’s top scorer was Gurutva Singh who was run out for 15.

Churchie openers Zac Moore (39) and Banjo Jenkins (48) were both not out against Nudgee

There was a close one between TGS and TSS, with TSS batsmen Cooper Brown (50) and Jack Penfold (47) giving their side a winning advantage.

Leo Alexander (41, 39 balls) was splendid for TGS in an unsuccessful run chase.

In 10As, BGS skipper Oliver Dauber (32) dominated early, but Terrace bowlers Hayden Wiltshire and Sam Mackley then got on top. They both took three wickets each.

There was a successful run chase by IGS against BBC, largely due to Ryan Weththasinghe’s 59 not out. Hamish Downs (4-27) took the figures for TGS in a wonderful eight over effort.

BBC’s top score was Thomas Bree (25).

In a high scoring match between Nudgee and Churchie, Churchie won the shootout with Hugo Harris (42 not out) and Will Souter (37) impressing.

But it was Nudee’s Charlie Henderson (59 not out, 93 balls) who top scored.

In 11As Lachlan Evetts (4-29) impressed for Terrace, as did Angus McNamara (4-29) for BGS.

But the best 11s effort of the day came from Oliver Hottot (6-27, 6.4 overs), although not enough to get BCC the win.

For Nudgee Thomas Bayo crashed 72 (76 balls) to give his side victory despite Churchie’s Sean Hansen making 58.

TSS’s Thomas Barnes made the most in 11As, 83 from just 89 balls, and then took 1-6 against TGS.
