Former Australian Test cricketer Michael Slater has been sentenced to four years in jail for domestic violence offences, but has been immediately released from custody on a suspended sentence.

The 55-year-old was sentenced in Maroochydore district court on Tuesday after pleading guilty to seven charges, including two counts of choking a woman.

The charges included stalking, assault and burglary, in relation to several incidents involving a woman in the Noosa region in late 2023.

The once-celebrated cricketer was handed a fully suspended sentence after already serving more than a year in custody, after failing on multiple occasions to secure bail.

Judge Glen Cash on Tuesday sentenced Slater to four years’ imprisonment, to be partially suspended after time served.

That means he will only return to custody if he commits another serious offence.

In handing down the sentence Judge Glen Cash told Slater that alcohol had ruined his lucrative TV employment, which he transitioned into following a successful cricket career.

“It’s obvious Mr Slater that you are an alcoholic,” Cash said.

“Regrettably your alcoholism has brought an end to your profession.

“Your rehabilitation will not be easy — alcoholism is part of your make-up.”

The court heard Slater plans to return to NSW to live with his family.

After making his Australian Test debut during the 1993 Ashes tour, Slater played 74 Tests for his country, amassing 5,312 runs at an average of 42.83 with 14 tons.

He also played 42 one-day internationals before retiring from cricket in 2004 to pursue a TV commentary career.
