Off the back of a record-breaking Mitch Owen century, the Hurricanes were able to lift the BBL trophy for the first time.

But after he was dismissed for 108 off 42 balls in the 11th over, a feud between gloveman took centre stage, with the pair trading verbal barbs before Billings’ voice could be heard on the stump mic.

“Nice Wadey, you’re always making friends aren’t you? Always,” Billings said after Wade missed a reverse sweep.

The next delivery, Wade played the same shot and reverse swept a Tom Andrews delivery successfully, finding the boundary before turning back quickly to address Billings.

“He may not be making friends, but he’s making runs... he loves to be brought into the battle,” Mark Howard said.

Billings was then heard saying: “Relax mate... just like Punter (Ricky Ponting) said, he can’t play with a straight bat against spin. Just like Punter said.

“Good fishing down in Tassie.”

The conversation left Fox Cricket’s commentators giggling, with Billings desperate to have even the slightest impact on a contest slipping away from the Thunder.

“Wade and Billings having a little byplay,” Adam Gilchrist said, before Mark Waugh added: “I think Wadey can relax a bit... he’s got the feathers up on the back of the neck”.

The pair then continued the next time they came face-to-face.

“He said I’m a s*** bloke, that’s what he was saying,” Wade said.

“Don’t swear mate, there’s kids watching,” Billing chimed in.

To which Wade responded: “He’s saying I’m a bad person, that’s what he’s saying, no one likes me. Punter said I can’t play.”

“Mate, you are sweeping on the flattest pitch in the world, it hasn’t spun once,” Billings said.

Wade then blocked the ball, with the pair coming into contact as Billings walked back to his mark after retrieving it.

“Come on, there’s no need for that. You’re not a child, you’re 38 years old mate,” he said.
