SuperCoach BBL: Top trade targets for round 5, round 6 Sydney Thunder double

There are no teams on the double in round 5 – which makes this the perfect time to get ahead of the pack in SuperCoach BBL. See TIM MICHELL’s top trade targets here.

Overton threatens Mankad in heated clash

Now is the time when your SuperCoach BBL future planning starts.

With no teams on the double in round 5, it’s time to start bringing Thunder players in so you’re set for their round 6 double.

Of course, it’s still important to be scoring as big as possible as every point count in a nine-round SuperCoach BBL season.

But if you get the mix right of Thunder trade-ins and players with big points ceilings, you can nail the next two rounds and make a mid-season charge.

We rate the priority trade targets below.

Daniel Sams

Average: 51.5

Sams has long been one of the premier scorers in SuperCoach BBL and a must-have whenever Sydney Thunder has a double. He’s all but guaranteed four overs and bowls at key stages. However, his batting role has diminished this year after being pushed to No.8 below Chris Green.

Wes Agar

Average: 103

His price has jumped steeply in the past two rounds and you’ll be paying close to top dollar if you want until the round 6 double to grab Agar. He has taken seven wickets in two games since his Thunder debut, taking a wicket every seven balls on average. His hit-the-wicket style suits the juicy Showgrounds deck perfectly.

David Warner

Average: 49.8

Batters can always be hit-and-miss, especially in a round where they only play once. But the signs were great from Warner against the Renegades. After getting an early reprieve from the DRS, he made 86 not out and proved his class in tricky batting conditions. You should be able to get away with waiting until round 6, but could also get a jump on the pack if you think Warner will score well against the Scorchers.

Chris Green

Average: 49.8

Green can be hit-and-miss as a more defensive spinner (he scored 106 in round 1 then 0 in round 2), but being elevated in the batting order to No.7 this summer increases his SuperCoach ceiling. If you’re after a Thunder all-rounder and already have Sams, Green is your man. He should bowl four overs in every match.

Tom Andrews

Average: 32.5

With doubts over when Tanveer Sangha will return from injury, Andrews has come into vogue as one of the best cheapies from the Thunder. The left-arm spinner has 1-34 and 1-32 in his two Thunder appearances. Importantly, the Thunder have gone into all bar one game this season with only five bowlers.

Lockie Ferguson

Average: 51.8

The Kiwi speedster will soon depart the BBL for the UAE, but Ferguson has proven his value in a short stint in lime green. Ferguson took six wickets in his first three Thunder games before going wicketless against the Renegades. He’ll have a big Break Even going into round 5, so it’s best to wait until next round when we’ll have a better idea about his availability and when he’ll also be cheaper.

Jason Sangha

Average: 59

Keep an eye on the Thunder team sheet before committing to Sangha – he missed round 4 with a bicep injury. He made 33 and took 1-9 on his return to the Thunder side but was injured minutes after getting the wicket of Glenn Maxwell. Sangha was one of the leading runscorers in BBL11 but has struggled to lock down a regular role since. That should change now, at least until Sam Konstas returns.

Glenn Maxwell

Average: TBC

When there are no SuperCoach BBL doubles, you want to target players with the biggest points ceilings. Maxwell is exactly that, someone who can score big with bat, ball and in the field. He hasn’t bowled as often in BBL14 but is still capable of the spectacular. You sense a big score isn’t far away and he’s more affordable than at the start of BBL14.

Dan Lawrence

Average: TBC

This would be a hit-and-run mission as Lawrence is only slated to play once more for the Stars as an injury replacement for Tom Curran. But he’ll be a great POD and has is capable of scoring big, as he showed last season when he scored 116 runs and took six wickets in five games for the Stars. Listed as BAT only but might pinch a few overs.

Finn Allen

Average: 23

Allen has finally arrived in BBL14. After a horror start to life as a Scorcher where he scored 10 runs in four innings, Allen blasted off on New Year’s Eve with 50 from 23 balls, scoring 85 SuperCoach points. He’s not a player you’d want on field as his scoring will be volatile but he’s a perfect BAT bench loop who’ll be available for less than $90k. He might be the cheapie who helps you nab Sams and Agar.

Brendan Doggett

Average: TBC

Where was Doggett the first four games? OK, his innings of 47 not out is unlikely to happen again – certainly this season. After all, he had 42 BBL runs in as many games before New Year’s Eve. But, more importantly, Doggett bowled superbly against the Scorchers, taking 1-19 from three overs. He’s set to spike in price but will continue rising as a standout mid-year cash cow.
