Broad’s sad act in commentary box sums up England’s day - and series so far

Watching England villain Stuart Broad squirm in the commentary box has been an unexpected joy for Aussie fans to begin the Ashes - and this was delicious.

Australia is pushing England towards the ropes as this Ashes series reaches a pivotal moment - and Stuart Broad is getting desperate.

As the hosts flipped the Bazball script and smashed their way to a healthy first innings lead on day two - with four wickets in the shed - the England villain was a sight to see in the Channel 7 commentary box.

Every Australian batsman got a start and most scored at a rapid pace as England’s bowlers failed to show up for the second innings in a row following their bludgeoning at the hands of Travis Head in Perth.

And as Alex Carey put the finishing touches on a 378-run day for the Aussies, Broad was willing to “take anything right now”.

Carey, no stranger to an Ashes controversy, was very clear about getting the OK from the England team before picking up a ball off the pitch and handing it back to the fielding team.

But that didn’t stop Broad raising his finger in jest as he sat next to Ricky Ponting and James Brayshaw.

“He actually appealed from here,” Ponting said, to laughs in the room and across living rooms in Australia.

It came at the end of a long day for the visitors, who only added eight runs to their overnight score and then were seemingly helpless against an Aussie batting line-up spearheaded by Jake Weatherald (72), Marnus Labuschagne (65) and Steve Smith (61), as Australia made it to stumps with a 44-run lead.

The sight of England captain Ben Stokes struggling physically late in the day as Carey (46 not out) kicked away was another headache.

On a day Josh Hazlewood’s fresh injury worry cast doubts over his chances of playing any part in this year’s Ashes series, the Aussies will be hoping to build a sizeable first innings lead in the Brisbane sunshine on day three.

Check out how the day unfolded with our updates below.
