St Edmund’s Patrick Schmidt produced one of the great AIC all around performances while St Patrick’s threw a spanner in the works by beating Villanova College in an action-packed round 4 of action.

In other matches Marist College Ashgrove (128) climbed off the canvas to beat Padua College (68), with pacemen Baxter White and Jacob Kumaru taking seven wickets between them, while St Laurence’s College (3-132) beat St Peters Lutheran College (9-131).

On a day where bowlers dominated the bat, St Edmund’s Schmidt found success with both bat and ball as his team broke through for its first win of the season by scoring 7-68 to beat Iona College (67).

Schmidt scored 32, one of the highest scored by an individual batsman across the round, after earlier taking a stunning 6-8.

Renowned for his control, line and length, the veteran of three seasons in the First XI put the ball in the right spot and proved a man of the match performer.

“On the pitch we were playing on he just made the batsmen play,’’ said St Edmund’s College director of sport Max Luxton.

“He was in that area of uncertainty where the batman was not sure whether to go back or forward.’’

Importantly he received support from fellow new ball bowler Lachlan Skull (3-14) who, on a normal day, would have captured headlines.

But this was no ordinary day and Schmidt is to be commended for his sizzling individual performance which gave Eddies the joy of hard earned success.

Kobe Rae (17) also scored double figures as the Iona College bowlers hit their opponents like gale force winds.

Archer Linning (3-12) and his brother Daniel (2-8 took the first three wickets between them, while in his second spell Archer dismissed Schmidt close to the victory target. Bodie Richardson also claimed two wickets, but it was not enough.

Luxton said Schmidt’s batting also had focus.

“You could tell today meant a lot to him. After we lost some wickets in the chase, he was able to come in and steady things.’’

Luxton was delighted for the team. “They are a good bunch of kids. They are pretty close friends, enjoy their cricket and that is showing.

“We have been competitive for a couple of wickets now without getting a win and it was good to see them win today.’’

Curlew Park action saw Benjamin Buechler and Bailey Reed scramble St Patrick’s College (8-139) to a thrilling victory over Villanova College (138)

Heroes of last season’s premiership winning effort, Buechler and Reed were at it again, with Reed top scoring with 49 and Buechler 25 not out as Paddies came back from the dead after being 6-48.

The pair added 76 before Reed was dismissed, leaving Buechler to be there at the end.

Buechler batting efforted followed his bowling performance as he and Harrison Clench speared through the top order before Baiden Parker (48) rallied Villanova College from 6-45 to 138.

Adding to the early morning chaos for Villa was a run out and before you could blink the unbeaten premiership favourites were in danger of being bundled out.

Not for the first time this season Parker was among the runs, with he, Dimitri Horton (23) and Gus Godwin (17) finding just enough to give the Villa bowlers a target to defend.

Parker produced a beautifully paced innings, mixing defence and judgment with some telling blows that lead to 32 of his 48 runs coming in fours or sixes.

It was great to see Buechler back at the bowling crease after he had been curtailed by injury.

An all-rounder, Buechler has been mighty with the bat, but today’s six over stint yielded 3-8.

Joel Heinrich then mopped up the tail, finishing with the amazing figures of 3-2 from just eight balls.

There was then early encouragement for Villa when Ben Jeffs dismissed Paddies’ ace batsman Harry Moore. Jeffs bowled well to take 2-22 but more impressive was Ben Fingland whose 10 overs cost just 11 runs.

PLAYERS TO WATCH, SEASON 2021

Padua’s bowling cohort of Pembroke 3-25), Janas (2-4), Singh (2-19) and Cotgreave (2-22) had a morning out against Marist College Ashgrove at Ashgrove No.1 before the home side struck back hard.

Defending just 128, Ashgrove’s Baxter White (4-32) and arguably the competition’s best paceman Jacob Kumaru (3-19) had the visitors 4-13 before going on with the job.

While there was nice support bowling from Marcus Zipf and Nicholas Muir, the damage was done early by White and Kumaru and Padua never recovered.

Padua’s Sebastian Heselden withstood the duo for 16 runs, but there was to be no recovery on this occasion for Padua.

On a day when runs were like rivers of gold, Kumaru also contributed 13 not out in a late partnership with top scorer Nathan Armitage (18) that gave Ash a chance after they were 8-82.

Full marks to the Padua attack in the first session.

No doubt licking their lips in anticipation of bowling first, they had to be patient as Ashgrove crept to 0-28.

But Cooby Janas snared two quick wickets and then, shortly after, Nathan Singh claimed his two wickets and the slide landslide had begun.

At St Peter’s Lutheran College, Oliver Lunt (67) did it again for St Laurence’s as the visitors overcame a dogged bowling effort by the Saints to win by seven wickets.

Defending 132, St Peters’ bowlers Oscar Wright and George Thomas had Lauries’ 2-17 before Lunt stepped in, taking his team’s batting up a gear.

The best batsman in the AIC, Lunt reached his 50 from as many balls after striking five fours and four sixes.

Nicholas Parrott played the support role as Lunt quickly took the match away from St Peters.

Then, as his innings progressed, Parrott also opened his shoulders and in the end the runs came quickly for Lauries.

Earlier, the St Laurence’s attack was on song as Max Peapell and Noah Edmonds gained most rewards around an excellent team effort involving Lochie Josefski (1-16), Callum Reidy (1-25), Luke Stenhouse (1-23) and Jack Richards (1-4).

“Our bowling partnerships were very balanced today and we held some good catches,’’ said St laurence’s coach Cameron Wigans.

“Our spin was a high quality with Noah Edmunds excellent, and well supported by Lochie Josefski and Jack Richards. Callum Reidy bowled well with the second new ball for the second week running.

“Our top order batting continued to dominant, with Ollie Lunt again a class above and Nick Parrott very consistent in the middle.’’

He said if Saints missed their line or length, the pair were able to capitalise.

Given the quality of the attack, St Peters trio of Lachlan Donohue (26), Curtis Beevers (36) and Keshavan Munsamy (21) did well when batting, while James Roberts added a valuable 12 not out.
