Former Australian fast bowling star Jason Gillespie has been appointed Test coach of Pakistan.
Gillespie, who recently parted ways with South Australia with a year to go on his contract, will be a red ball coach only with South Africa’s experienced Gary Kirsten to take over the Pakistan side in limited overs cricket.
Australian coaches are well thought of in Pakistan with Gillespie’s former teammates Matthew Hayden and Shaun Tait recently working with the Pakistan side.
The announcement in Lahore followed a typically turbulent time in Pakistan cricket where the board, coaching and captaincy positions have been undergoing major change after Pakistan finished a disappointing fifth at the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup in India.
“I’m really keen for Pakistan to play our way,” Gillespie said to Pakistan media just before his appointment was confirmed.
“Let’s entertain our fans with a bit of fun and play with smiles on our faces.’’
Former Australian coach Mickey Arthur, Pakistan team director for the World Cup, left his role earlier this year along with several other staff.
