How much will Mike Tyson and Jake Paul make for the fight?

The fight purses for Tyson and Paul have not been publicly revealed, however boxing industry experts have estimated Iron Mike will be earning roughly A$31m for his part in the fight.

Meanwhile at a recent news conference, Paul declared he’s “here to make $40 million (A$62m) and knock out a legend”.

How old is Mike Tyson?

Once known as “The Baddest Man on the Planet”, Tyson turned 58 years old on June 30 this year.

The youngest heavyweight world champion in history when he was just 20 years old, Tyson was once renowned for his incredible power and ability to knock opponents out in short time.

Much of the interest in the fight is whether he can somehow recapture at least some of that power nearing his 60s.

He is taking on Paul, who is a massive 31 years younger than his opponent at just 27. Paul will turn 28 on January 17.

For a little context, Paul wasn’t born when Tyson fought Evander Holyfield the first time in 1996 and was just over five months old when Tyson was disqualified for twice biting Holyfield’s ear in the rematch the following year.

Is Paul vs Tyson an official fight?

Yes it is. It will officially be listed on both fighter’s records after it was sanctioned by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul rules

In deciding to sanction the fight, the Texas regulators instigated some unusual rules for heavyweight bouts that allowed for Tyson’s advanced age.

Both fighters will wear smaller 10-ounce (283-gram) gloves, rather than the standard 14-ounce (397 grams).

It is also being held over eight rounds, not the usual 10 or 12.

Finally they will be two-minute rounds, instead of three.

There was initially talk of the fighters wearing head guards, but that will not be the case.

When is the Paul vs Tyson weigh-in?

The official weigh-in is on Friday, November 15 (AEDT) at The Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory in Irving, Texas.

When did Mike Tyson last fight?

“Iron” Mike’s last sanctioned fight was against American Kevin McBride on June 11, 2005. Deducted two points for an intentional sixth-round headbutt, Tyson didn’t get off his stool to start the seventh round and the fight was awarded to McBride.

Having lost three of his last four fights, Tyson promptly retired after this fight.

He had an eight-round exhibition bout with Roy Jones Jr in November 2020, which went the distance and was ruled a split draw, although most experts felt Tyson did enough to win.

Paul actually fought on the undercard that day, knocking out former NBA slam dunk champion Nate Robinson in the second round.

Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul odds

At the time of writing, Paul is a $1.55 favourite with bookmakers to Tyson’s $2.85, with the draw at $10.

A Paul knockout is the current betting pick at $2.35, while a Tyson KO is $3.45.

Who will win Tyson vs Paul?

The fight is realistically only going to go one of two ways — Tyson manages to find a trademark early punch and knock Paul out or the younger man outlasts Tyson and gets the victory.

A great number of people — this writer included — would love to see smart mouth Paul knocked out, something fight fans have hoped to see for some time now.

A 58-year-old Tyson finally doing it would be something to behold.

But Tyson had no tank towards the tail end of his career and while some of his training videos released in the lead-up to the fight have been impressive, it's highly unlikely he has discovered the fountain of youth.

Paul has shown improvement in his young fighting career and while he has never fought as a heavyweight, that is unlikely to be an issue.

With two-minute rounds, Tyson might make it further than many expect, but we believe Paul will get the victory, one way or another.

What happens next for Tyson and Paul?

If he wins, Tyson has already been linked with fights against fellow old-timers and some of his contemporaries Lennox Lewis and Holyfield.

We can see that happening really regardless of the outcome, unless Tyson is abysmal and calls it quits once again.

Paul is yet to truly test himself, carefully selecting his opponents to date, and needs some bigger notches on his belt than a near 60-year-old to get anywhere near a world title shot.
