Aussie boxer’s massive shot on Mike Tyson-Jake Paul undercard

A little-known Aussie will feature on one of boxing’s biggest nights ever when he fights alongside Mike Tyson and Jake Paul.

A little-known Aussie boxer is getting a chance to shine on the undercard of next month’s enormous fight between the legendary Mike Tyson and Jake Paul in Dallas, Texas.

Tyson, 58, is returning to the ring almost two decades since his last officially sanctioned bout, a loss to Kevin McBride way back in 2005.

But the former “Baddest Man on the Planet” (50-6 record) remains a huge name in boxing circles and there is intense interest in his match-up with former YouTube star Paul (10-1) on November 15 at AT&T Stadium.

A record audience is expected to tune in when the fight is broadcast internationally on streaming site Netflix and someone who could benefit more than most from that level of eyeballs is Australian boxer Dana “Deadly” Coolwell.

A 25-year-old Queenslander, Coolwell has been selected to feature on the undercard against undefeated American Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington (13-0).

Featherweight Coolwell has a 13-2 record, winning his last six straight fights.

Considering his last fight was a unanimous decision win over Fernando Tagpuno at the Caloundra RSL Club, the Indigenous youngster is relishing the gigantic stage he will feature on at the home of the Dallas Cowboys.

“Every young kid playing sports dreams of competing on the biggest stage and I’m absolutely thrilled that this moment has arrived for me,” Coolwell said in a statement from Most Valuable Promotions announcing the official undercard.

“To be part of Mike Tyson’s return to the ring at the iconic AT&T stadium on a platform like Netflix is an absolute privilege.

“I’m proud to be representing Australia on this historic show and I can’t wait to show the world what my people are made of.”

Introduced to boxing at the age of 14, Coolwell fights out of the Hinterland Boxing Club on the Sunshine Coast and trainer Steve Pitt.

Considered an excitement machine in the ring, Coolwell has worked through the Australian ranks and most recently secured the IBO Intercontinental featherweight title with that victory over Tagpuno.

The fight is scheduled for eight rounds and the Aussie is taking on another highly-rated boxer, who hails from Tyson’s home town of Brownsville, New York.

The 27-year-old Carrington has eight knockouts from his 13 wins and also can’t wait for the epic night of fights.

“It’s a privilege to be part of the Paul versus Tyson event,” Carrington said.

“As a Brownsville native who grew up idolising Mike Tyson, boxing on the same card as him is a dream come true.

“AT&T Stadium and Netflix, get ready for The Shu Shu Show.”

Tyson’s clash with Paul has garnered plenty of criticism, with many fight fans and experts stating a bout featuring a 58-year-old former champion should not go ahead.

It was originally scheduled for July before Tyson suffered an ulcer flare up that forced it to be postponed.

Those concerns have been largely overshadowed by global excitement and fascination of the event, however, to see whether Tyson has any power left in those once undisputed heavyweight world champion fists.

There have been some minor but potentially crucial adjustments for the main event, with the eight rounds shortened from three minutes to two, plus the gloves the fighters will use have been increased from standard 10 ounces (283 grams) to 14 ounces (396 grams).

Both adjustments should offer assistance to Tyson as he attempts to recapture any of his old magic in the ring.
