They take place on two suburban fields in Sydney this week but these schoolboy rugby trials could well provide the springboard into a national team for some of our top teen talent.

The best young talent in school rugby and across Sydney and Country will play at the trials at Shore playing fields at Northbridge on Thursday and Southern Districts Forshaw Rugby Park on Friday.

The trials are being used to fill an assortment of teams stepping out at the upcoming Australian Schools championships which are being combined with the Australian junior rugby championships on the Sunshine Coast for the first time.

This event runs from July 7-13 and involves 49 boys and girls sevens and XV teams.

After Friday’s matches, selectors will meet late to choose schools, NSW Junior and NSW Barbarians sides to head north for the Sunshine Coast extravaganza.

NSW Waratahs Pathways co-ordinator Matt Evrard said the two days of football were vitally important for young players to impress the numerous coaches and selectors watching on.

“These trials are very important for many reason,’’ Evrard said.

“The Australian U18s selectors are flying down Wednesday for them.

“And for us at the Waratahs it helps us get our heads around who will make our full-time academies when they leave school.

“And then there’s also always players that just pop up.

“You never know what is going to happen.’’
