Airport first, V8 Supercars track next

A POTENTIAL motorsport track on the Darling Downs could be built in nine months but Wagners chairman John Wagner says its focus is on finishing the airport.

A POTENTIAL motorsport track on the Darling Downs could be built in nine months but Wagners chairman John Wagner says its focus is on finishing Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport.

A media report at the weekend said Toowoomba was "almost certain" to be home to Queensland's fourth V8 Supercars event in 2016 but Wagner said it was premature to expect that.

"I think we've got to be careful we don't get ahead of ourselves," he told The Chronicle while down at the Gold Coast 600. "We've got to get a fair bit of support from three levels of government."

He believed the 2016 completion time frame was not out of the question although Wagners was first focused on the completion of its airport at Wellcamp, which was due to see first passenger flights take off next month.

"We could build the thing in nine months," Wagner said.

"There is a lot to do and the priority at the moment is to finish the airport."

The possible motorsport track would be built next to the Wellcamp airport.

The Chronicle revealed back in August that Wagners had enlisted V8 Supercars legend Mark Skaife to participate in the design of the track, which could draw comparison to Bathurst's Mt Panorama.
