‘Won’t miss much’: Voss flags heavy post-season review, insists he has support of ‘entire club’

Carlton’s powerbrokers have been forced to guarantee Michael Voss’ tenure beyond this season, but the damning numbers don’t lie.

Carlton coach Michael Voss says he feels support from the “entire club”, as external pressure mounts following a sixth consecutive loss.

The Blues will finish round 13 in the bottom four after a 34-point loss to Essendon at the MCG on Sunday night, in front of more than 80,000 spectators.

Club powerbrokers Luke Sayers and Brian Cook both threw their weight behind Voss ahead of the match in radio interviews, with Sayers insisting Voss would be the coach until at least the end of 2024 as per his contract.

The Blues were blown off the park in a third-quarter blitz from their arch-rivals, conceding seven goals and kicking just two.

Carlton’s registered just seven tackles in the third term, with the lack of pressure dubbed “unacceptable” by Voss.

Despite the external criticisms of Voss, he insisted it had not had an impact internally.

“What I‘ve always felt from the entire club is support,” he said.

“Support for our program and what we’re trying to achieve.

“There’s some medium things that we need to be able to get after and there’s some longer term things that we need to be able to get after as well.”

Cook told ABC Radio pre-game the club that, while Voss would coach the club next season, the door remained ajar for changes to the football department around him.

Asked directly if he felt changes needed to be made to the broader football department, Voss said the club was focused on the short-term.

“We’ve got 10 games that we need to be able to play out really strongly. I feel like we’ve provided a great environment for our players and we’ve been able to resource that really well over the last little while,” he said.

“We’ll continue to do those things that we need to be able to reinforce within our program, within the system we want to be able to play and the things that are really important to us.

“That won’t change for us. They won’t change in terms of our reinforcement of that over the next 10 weeks.

“At the right time, we’ll sit back and we’ll review it thoroughly. But right now we’re in the midst of a season and we need to be able to make sure that we played it out strongly.”

Pressed on the Blues’ pre-season and whether some aspects were in hindsight lacking, Voss said the club “won’t miss much” in its post-season review.
