‘We’ve been under the pump’: Pressure eased by Giants’ huge win

The GWS Giants notched an important win on Saturday night and coach Leon Cameron is encouraging the side to take its energy into next week.

GWS coach Leon Cameron admitted he felt the pressure that came with the Giants’ 1-5 start to the season, but relief didn’t feature in the range of emotions he felt following his side’s 59-point belting of Adelaide.

Cameron’s tenure at GWS was under intense scrutiny in the lead-in to Saturday’s clash at Adelaide Oval, with that pressure eased somewhat by the dominant display against the Crows.

While Cameron was well aware of the questions being raised about his future, he maintained the speculation didn’t distract him from the task at hand.

“AFL footy is the greatest leveller ever,” Cameron said.

“It’s like golf; you can play a really good shot then you can play a really poor shot and it can level you out.

“That can happen within a day or a week so it keeps you grounded, coaching.

“There’s lots of pressure but having a good crew around you is really important and we’ve got that.

“There will be ups and downs as I said last week.”

Toby Greene starred with four first-half goals and Josh Kelly was best afield with 41 possessions, but GWS had winners across every line against the listless Crows.

The result mirrored the 67-point defeat the Giants handed Adelaide almost exactly one year ago at the same venue and proved to be the spark that ignited their run to the finals.

“We’re an evolving team … we’re totally different (to last year),” Cameron said.

“But there’s no doubt the nourishment that you get out of a win helps the place.

“We’ve been under the pump, we know that, but we’ve got to bottle that and take it into the Geelong game.

“We’ve played some really good teams thus far and we come up against a cracking team next week.

“We have to live up to our end of the bargain again.”
