West Coast will hold pick 1 until draft night as pick swap deadline closes

North Melbourne’s hopes of claiming Harley Reid have faded as the Eagles are locked in to taking pick 1 into draft night later this month.

Meet the stars of the 2023 AFL draft

West Coast will take the No. 1 pick into draft night as North Melbourne’s hopes of claiming Harley Reid fade.

The deadline for clubs to swap picks was reached at 5pm on Friday, meaning clubs can’t do any deals until the first night of the draft on November 20.

The Kangaroos (who have picks 2, 3, 15, 17 and 18) and Demons (6 and 11) have made multiple efforts to strike a deal with West Coast on pick one in a bid to keep Reid in Victoria.

But the Eagles are set on taking the powerful Tongala midfield-forward after North Melbourne’s surprise last-round win over Gold Coast handed West Coast the No. 1 pick.

The Roos have no regrets over the win, saying the victory was the highlight of the season and was important to the club’s culture and direction under Alastair Clarkson.

The Herald Sun revealed on October 26 West Coast would be unmoved by North’s offers for Reid unless they included picks two and three.

West Coast also has picks 23 and 37 and could snare next generation academy livewire Lance Collard at pick 23 amid clubs fears Collard could become homesick in Victoria.

Collard is rated a top-15 player on talent but the man who has been likened to Collingwood’s Bobby Hill could slide to West Coast’s second pick.

Geelong has pick eight and has attracted interest from North Melbourne in the Roos’ bid to move up the order.

Essendon’s pick nine has also been targeted by clubs who have picks in the teens and want to jump up the order.

Recruiters are certain there is strong talent inside the top-10 before it drops off in the teens.

St Kilda has pick 13 and has flagged its intent to secure an earlier selection, while Carlton (pick 22 and 28) will also be one to watch on draft night as it eyes a move.

The draft will be held across two nights on November 20-21.
