Melbourne defender Steven May spent the night in hospital after suffering an allergic reaction to food during a night out with his partner.

May’s partner, Sachi Dade, posted an Instagram story of May in a hospital bed, writing: “Why does he have to try and die before we go on our holiday?! What I am happy about though is that I can say I saved his life forever now. This will definitely have its advantages.”

The 31-year-old was discharged from hospital on Sunday, with the club at that stage unaware of what food consumed by May caused the reaction.

Dade later posted a text message exchange with May, where he joked he had been “very shellfish”.

May placed fifth in the club’s best and fairest count on Friday night.

He joined the Dees at the end of 2018 following 123 games with the Gold Coast Suns.

May and teammate Jake Lever were vital in the club’s surge to the 2021 premiership and had solid seasons despite the club’s missed opportunities in both the 2022 and 2023 finals series.
