Toby Greene’s head split open, left bloody ‘mess’ in brutal collision

Usually Toby Greene’s the one doing the damage, but this time the GWS skipper copped a brutal blow that left him bloodied and mummified.

Toby Greene's head split open in nasty collision

Toby Greene had blood streaming from his head after he was clobbered early on in GWS’ six-point loss to Hawthorn in Launceston on Saturday afternoon.

Coming off their bye, the Giants were looking to get a win on the board and push toward the top four in the second half of the season.

But it wasn’t to be, with a controversial downfield free kick gifting the Hawks a 12.13 (85) to 12.7 (79) victory.

The Hawks started well at UTAS Stadium and Greene had his head cut open in a brutal marking contest late in the first quarter.

It looked like the Giants captain was going to take a mark inside forward 50 before Hawthorn defender Sam Frost came over to spoil the ball — his elbow smashed into Greene’s head, opening up a nasty cut.

But blood immediately began pouring out of the gash down Greene’s face and he left the field to get patched up.

“Have a look at that,” Dwayne Russell said on Fox Footy.

Hawks legend Dermott Brereton said: “Oh yeah, Frosty might have done more than just spoil him. That’s a mess.”

The Daily Telegraph’s Lachlan McKirdy wrote on X: “Toby Greene completely collected in the head with blood streaming from a cut. Not even seen by the umpires, bizarre.”

Nick Dal Santo described the collision as a “glancing accidental elbow from Frost that drew blood”.

Greene returned soon after, looking slightly mummified with tape around his head and sporting GWS rookie Darcy Jones’ orange and charcoal headgear.

Jones, who wasn’t picked in GWS’ team for the game, posted on Instagram: “Hand it back mate @uncletobygreene.”

“That is unusual,” Dal Santo said.

“I wonder how you would feel probably not ever wearing a helmet in your life and then having the head wrapped up. He’ll be easy to identify.”

The Giants pulled ahead in the second quarter, kicking four goals to one to take a 19-point lead into halftime.

The Hawks held on to claim their fifth win in six games.
