The few days between being drafted and moving north was ample time for new Lion Luke Lloyd to complete a final act of appreciation for his community.

Lloyd was drafted to the Brisbane Lions with pick 42 in Tuesday’s national draft.

Just four days later, and only hours before he was set to move north, Lloyd resumed in his normal role as a Brighton Athletics Club volunteer on Saturday morning.

After being a member of Brighton Little Aths, Lloyd stuck around as a volunteer, calling go on thousands of 100 metre sprints.

Despite his reliability as a volunteer, club president Jane Fitch wasn’t expecting Lloyd on Saturday morning.

“He’s been with us for many, many years, he was a little athlete with us for seven years and then after that he’s been volunteering for a couple of years,” Fitch said.

“He’s started that many races for us, he’s a part of the Brighton family.

“He’s such a humble, young man, he came and helped us out – it was great to have him there.

“I wasn’t expecting him at all, I would’ve expected he would’ve headed off north straight away but no, he came down, did all his starting, started our races then he went on his way.

“I think it’s incredible for a young person to do that and it shows such great community spirit.”

Lloyd, who comes from De La Salle in Melbourne’s south, booted 19 goals for his school side this year and earned a VFL debut for Frankston at the back end of the season.

De La president Phil Proy was unaware of Lloyd’s final act but wasn’t shocked to hear he had followed his role through to the end.

“I can’t say I am surprised at all,” Proy said.

“Luke and his whole family are just brilliant people, a very down-to-earth family.

“I am not surprised he continued on with what he agreed to do previously before getting drafted.

“It’s good to see things haven’t changed for the young man.”

Fitch said the act is indicative of the community spirit of the athletics club and is always welcoming members and volunteers of all ages – particularly now with a vacancy at the 100m start line.
