The Brisbane Lions will take a nine-man leadership group into season 2024 headed by returning co-captains Lachie Neale and Harris Andrews.

Popular pairing Neale and Andrews will reprise their 2023 partnership after steering the Lions to within a straight kick of a premiership last season.

Brownlow Medallist Neale and superstar key defender Andrews partnered for the first time last season as captains and were re-elected by their teammates to continue on into 2024.

Last year’s standalone vice-captain Hugh McCluggage retains his role but will be joined by second-year Lion Josh Dunkley, who was a standout in his Brisbane debut last season.

“We are extremely happy for Harris, Lachie, Hugh and Josh to be our leaders for the season and they all thoroughly deserve the privilege,” Brisbane footy boss Danny Daly said.

“To be the leaders of the Brisbane Lions is a huge honour and to be voted by your peers makes it even more special for these four guys.

“We went through the voting process again to guarantee our leaders were living up to the standards and values we expect as a club and the result of the vote confirmed that, which is no surprise to us but is a real testament to them.”

The announcement was made at the club’s 2024 season launch at Howard Smith Wharves on Tuesday night.

Players arrived by boat to the glitzy event in the shadow of the Story Bridge, which was lit up in Lions colours to mark the occasion.

Joining Neale, Andrews, McCluggage and Dunkley in the leadership group this season will be Charlie Cameron, Cam Rayner, Brandon Starcevich, Jarrod Berry and Oscar McInerney.

“What we were reminded of going through this process was how much leadership depth we have at the club and how many great people we have here,” Daly said.

“While these nine players are in official leadership roles, we have a list full of people who will lead in their own way this year and that’s what you need to be successful.”
