SuperCoach expert trade grades ahead of Round 10

Riley Bice. Matt Flynn. Caleb Daniel. Do we trade them out or do we hold? And is Jack Sinclair the buy of the season? Our experts give their verdicts on all the big moves.

SuperCoach AFL: Xerri goes MASSIVE, unmissable premium value, and trade Caleb? | The Phantom's Lair

SuperCoaches are facing plenty of headaches this week, from rookies which need culling to underperforming mid-pricers – but no downgrade options are throwing their hands up for us to take advantage of all this value.

We put the most popular trade-ins and trade-outs of the week to our experts.

TRADED OUT

Riley Bice ($375,300 DEF)

Al Paton: SELL – Preferably to a premium and not a worse rookie we will have to play on field.

Tim Michell: SELL – Averaging 77.8 in the last five rounds and has a breakeven of 102. There are just too many mouths to feed in the Sydney defence for anyone to score consistency. Just look at Matt Roberts.

Patch: SELL – I think there’s a world where you hold Riley Bice. It’s not the one I’m living in, and it’ll be a painful world this weekend back at the SCG, but I’d rather have Riley Bice on-field than Matt Carroll. Bice’s cash can go a long way though.

Tarquin Oakley: SELL – A 50-point second half saved Bice’s score against the Bombers. But he is not a reliable scorer so the smart play would be to cash in now.

Matt Forrest: SELL – He’s made us plenty of cash, and theoretically you could hold onto him for his points production. But it’s starting to dry up, so best upgrade.

Caleb Daniel ($440,600 MID/FWD)

AP: CONSIDER – Richmond is an easy match-up for half-backs so could give him one more week. But dreams of keeping him all year are over.

TM: SELL – With Smith, Petracca, Horne-Francis, Rankine, Macrae, Warner and even Matt Kennedy contending for top-six, keeping him has become less of a priority. The role is there but hard to ignore that he hasn’t reached 90 since round 5.

Patch: HOLD – He should be your last issue unless he’s dropped.

TO: CONSIDER – With that 51 in his system now he will likely lose cash in the next two weeks until his bye. His role is still solid though – so not opposed to keeping the faith.

MF: HOLD – One bad game but he’s been reliable. I don’t know if he’s a hold all season, could be a decent F7-8 at the end of the season.

Caiden Cleary ($259,300 FWD)

AP: HOLD – Need one rookie on my bench who’s a chance of putting up a half-decent score.

TM: SELL – One of about eight players I’d like to move on this week. Breakeven of 55 is gettable but his cash generation is all but done.

Patch: SELL – I think you can hold if you want or need but his time has just about come.

TO: CONSIDER – His cash gen is drying up. Ideally a trade but depends how many other issues you have.

MF: HOLD – He’s hit his breakeven in 4/6 of his games this year, but the money is starting to dry up. It’s the first week it’s fine to get rid of him, but could hold one or two more.

Isaac Kako ($234,500 MID/FWD)

AP: SELL – He can go.

TM: SELL – No guarantee to get his breakeven of 49 this week.

Patch: SELL – More like Bye-zaac Kako.

TO: SELL – In a similar boat to Cleary, but I’d rather keep the Swan than Kako.

MF: SELL – That one big bag that reset his price cycle hasn’t come, and it’s time to cut ties.

Matt Flynn ($389,500 RUC)

AP: CONSIDER – West Coast playing two rucks is not good. Could go this week or might stay depending on my seven other trade priorities.

TM: CONSIDER – Showed he can score when he put on about 45 points in the last quarter against Richmond. The issue was he scored 35 in the first three. Flynn had 64 ruck contests to Bailey Williams’ 24.

Patch: HOLD – I think we’ve got other priorities but if you need his cash to go up to someone else then it’s perfectly okay to cut him.

TO: SELL – Got him to make cash and he has done that. Now likely to drop this week so get rid of him.

MF: SELL – What a flash in the pan from Flynn. He sucked in a lot of us twice, but his breakeven is high and there’s no guarantees he’ll play.

Elijah Hewett ($287,000 MID/FWD)

AP: HOLD – Break Even still gettable. Safest to put him on the bench, though.

TM: CONSIDER – Not sure he’s a must-sell with a breakeven of 46 but if his value gets you to a premium don’t hesitate.

Patch: HOLD – I’m worried he might be sub but if not then he should keep making cash.

TO: HOLD – Reckon he’s a fair chance of bouncing back at home where he has scored 91 and 97 in his last two games.

MF: HOLD – He’s hit his breakeven 5/7 games, so I’d be holding firm. He’s capable of putting up a big 80+ score: he has cracked 90 twice this year.

Connor O’Sullivan ($319,300 DEF)

AP: SELL – Eked out a $2k price rise on Sunday but price set to fall next round.

TM: SELL – He’s scored 54 or less in four of his last five games and has a breakeven in the 90s. Don’t overthink this one.

Patch: SELL – Done his job far better than I ever thought he would. Thank you, Connor. I only wish I picked you.

TO: SELL – A pair of scores under 50 in his last two means it is time to go.

MF: SELL – His money has dried up, his breakeven is 92 and he’s not likely to crack that score. Time to cut ties and upgrade him.

Clayton Oliver ($457,600 MID)

AP: SELL – Move him on when it suits your upgrade plans.

TM: SELL – Sadly he’s miles off being a top-eight midfielder and is even putting his hand up to tag opposition stars now.

Patch: SELL – I love that he’s put himself into a selfless tagging role but it’s terrible for SuperCoach. No room for sentimentality here, flick him ASAP.

TO: SELL – A tough one for those who held him during his week off to cop a 64 against the Hawks. Upgrade time.

MF: HOLD – I hate that I’ve got him, but I’m holding firm – for now. The tagging role is scary, and I can understand why you’d shift him, but I’ll back in Clarry to find some form at some point.

Sam Powell-Pepper ($389,700 FWD)

AP: CONSIDER – BE is up over 100 but rookies you can start on the field are worth their weight in gold this year.

TM: SELL – Still beggars belief that he made more than $200k after starting the season with a score of 18. Well done if you stuck fat.

Patch: SELL – Time for SPP to go.

TO: SELL – Break even over 100 now.

MF: SELL – He’s losing cash and his breakeven is 111, not much thought going into this one. Trade him.

Jayden Short ($434,500 DEF)

AP: SELL – Not close to a top six defender and might not play this week.

TM: SELL – Some weeks it feels like Richmond has 23 players who want to take kick-ins. If you’re like me and unfortunately still have him, his very late withdrawal before the West Coast game should be the last straw.

Patch: SELL – Was never going to be worth the stress.

TO: CONSIDER – If he is out again this week Short can go. But unfortunately we can’t trade every underperforming player and Short is usually good for an 80+.

MF: HOLD – The late out hurts, but if he’s not missing weeks then don’t move off him.

The Ultimate SuperCoach POD? | The Phantom's Lair

TRADED IN

Jack Sinclair (DEF/MID $529,300)

AP: BUY – Role is a bit unclear at the moment but he’s good wherever he plays. Great price for the fourth-ranked defender this year.

TM: BUY – Best buy of the week. Premium star who has bottomed out and plays the battling Eagles. Has the best of the byes too.

Patch: BUY – He’s good. He’s cheap. Match made in heaven.

TO: BUY – Still has West Coast, North and Richmond in his run home and the round 13 bye shared with only Freo.

MF: CONSIDER – That price point is much more attractive, having dropped $63k since the start of the season. Not for me, but don’t see why not.

Hugh Boxshall (MID $113,500)

AP: CONSIDER – If he’s named in the starting 22 he might be the best rookie option this week.

TM: CONSIDER – Boxshall spent more time on the bench than the field against Carlton and this year has taught us Ross Lyon loves naming his kids as the sub. Could be a bust.

Patch: AVOID – I think I’m passing on Hugh.

TO: BUY – But only if he is picked in the starting 22.

MF: WAIT – If he’s selected, and he’s not the sub this week (two BIG if’s), then bring him in. Ross Lyon has no love for SuperCoach players though

Saad El-Hawli (DEF/MID $155,700)

AP: BUY – Played well and Essendon won. That means he won’t be the sub again … right?

TM: BUY – Surely he’s done enough to avoid being sub for a month after having 15 disposals in the first half against Sydney? Still only costs $36k more than his starting price and has handy DPP.

Patch: BUY – Should never have been sub in the first place and I goofed by not bringing him in last week. Will rectify it this week.

TO: BUY – Ended up being the pick of the rookies last week. His two non-sub affected games he has scored 67 and 69 so if he is picked he will make cash.

MF: BUY – The best rookie priced player, despite the price rise. He’s still cheap, he’s played enough games to go up in price, and he’s now not getting the sub vest.

Saad El-Hawli is one of the best cheapies on offer this week. Picture: Morgan Hancock/Getty Images.

Jed Bews (DEF $172,200)

AP: WAIT – In 11 season his best average is 63, but, hey, he was good against GWS. Definitely need to see another game, though.

TM: AVOID – I trust Geelong’s injury list about as much as I trust Jordan Dawson’s kicking. But if we believe that Tom Stewart could return any week and Jack Henry isn’t far off, it’s a matter of time until Bews is playing VFL. Bews has scored more than 90 five times in 172 games (2.9 per cent) so the chances of a repeat of Sunday are very remote.

Patch: WAIT – Writing wait this week, but reckon I’m a 97.1 per cent chance of writing AVOID next week.

TO: AVOID – Too many injured Geelong defenders close to returning.

MF: CONSIDER – Jed could be our rookie saviour, but I’m not convinced he’s firmly entrenched in their best 22. Wait and see and maybe buy if he goes well again. Tom Stewart still needs to return.

Dayne Zorko ($531,900 DEF)

AP: BUY – Bottomed out last week but still a good price. I’m not worried about Kiddy Coleman impacting his scores – let’s see him try to take a kick-in off Dayne.

TM: CONSIDER – Like many I can’t work out If Kiddy Coleman’s return will help or hinder him. But Zorko is defying all the odds at 36 to stay fit and be a top SuperCoach scorer.

Patch: CONSIDER – I‘m not picking him out of stubbornness at this point but I also still have concerns around what happens when Kiddy Coleman returns.

TO: BUY – A heavy discount on his starting price and just pumped out a 166.

MF: AVOID – Zorko did what he wanted last week against North Melbourne, and if you want him then this is the week to get him, but I’ve been burnt by him before.

Cooper Simpson ($119,900 FWD)

AP: WAIT – Good role in defence Could be a break glass in case of emergency (ie, El-Hawli dropped) pick this week, but I would prefer to wait until he’s on the bubble.

TM: CONSIDER – If you’ve already got El-Hawli, he’s the next best rookie buy this week. Returned to Freo’s side as a halfback and had 18 disposals and six marks against Collingwood. He’s had some big games playing in defence in the WAFL for Peel this year.

Patch: WAIT – Not until he’s on the bubble. Need to see him with Nathan O’Driscoll in the side before I go near him.

TO: WAIT – Would prefer El-Hawli or Boxhall this week if picked.

MF: WAIT – Playing in defence intrigued me, and he avoided the sub vest, but I’d be holding out for his bubble game and see if he stays in the side.

Archer Day-Wicks ($99,100 FWD)

AP: WAIT – If he gets through this game I’ll most likely buy him next week.

TM: PASS/CONSIDER – Only reason to buy would be if the extra $20k from Simpson to Day-Wicks got you a better premium upgrade. Special moment when he kicked his first goal but only scored 33.

Patch: AVOID – Feel-good story, love him, but not for SuperCoach. Especially not after just the one game.

TO: AVOID – Don’t trade in a rookie who has played one game and scored 33 points.

MF: WAIT – Another one-game rookie, don’t buy him. But I do like him after another game, if he avoids the sub vest. High impact medium forward that doesn’t play a pressure, low disposal count role. Could be a good downgrade.

Josh Dunkley has been a popular trade-in over recent weeks. Picture: James Wiltshire/AFL Photos via Getty Images.
Josh Dunkley has been a popular trade-in over recent weeks. Picture: James Wiltshire/AFL Photos via Getty Images.

Josh Dunkley ($539,000 MID)

AP: BUY – Scores 99 on a bad day.

TM: BUY – Quiet achiever but sitting eighth for total points and is the fifth-ranked midfielder this season in SuperCoach. Still available for more than $60k less than his starting price too.

Patch: BUY – What I’d give to turn back time and take him over Nick Daicos.

TO: BUY – But just watch how many Lions you pick in your team with that round 16 bye.

MF: CONSIDER – He had a little dip a month ago, but only two scores below 100 is great consistency. Definitely one to consider if you don’t have Neale or Ashcroft, but I’d be careful loading up on too many before the bye.

Max Homes ($498,700 DEF/MID)

AP: CONSIDER – Price is very appealing but his scores have been a bit all over the shop and I’m not really sure why.

TM: BUY – Thought we might get a few more weeks of being able to buy Holmes for less than $500k but not after his big last quarter against the Giants. He ranks ninth for total points in defence despite two scores in the 70s. Only slight concern is he could cop 4-5 tags on the run home. The Cats play Sydney, GWS and St Kilda from round 17 onwards.

Patch: BUY – I share some of Al’s concerns but under 500k is too much value for someone who’s that good. He, Bailey Dale and Jordan Clark are all great buys this week.

TO: BUY – Been down for a few weeks but bounced back into form against GWS so is ripe for the picking at under $500k.

MF: BUY – Holmes is a star, and despite his inability to break a tag I’d take the lumps with his high-scoring potential. Sub-500k and should be in the top 10 defenders pretty easily.

Changkuoth Jiath ($387,400 DEF/MID)

AP: CONSIDER – Don’t hate it. Injury history is terrifying but we need to get creative with the lack of cash generation this year. Just beware you’ll have to trade him out again, and I don’t have many of those left.

TM: PASS – Looked awesome on the weekend but you don’t get it much easier as a rebounding defender than playing against Melbourne. Hope he gets a proper run at it but CJs injury history makes him far too risky when there are so many good defensive options – some within about $100k.

Patch: PASS – He’s too expensive to be a money train at this point, and there are other players I’d rather as a 24th premo … if we even get there this year.

TO: AVOID – A tasty break even of -38 but he won’t be scoring 130s every week.

MF: AVOID – His best is so good, but he’s injury prone, can go missing at times and would be a sub candidate purely due to his explosive style. Not for me.
