SuperCoach AFL 2025: Experts’ verdicts on most traded players in Round 3

SuperCoaches have a chance to set up their season this week. With a maximum of three trades, who should we buy and sell? We asked the experts.

Must-have rookies, top trade targets, and it's time to boost! | The Phantom's Lair

A week ago the sensible advice in SuperCoach was to keep the trade powder dry and wait for one more game’s worth of information on potential trade targets.

Now it’s time to unload with both barrels, using two trades to grab players you missed in your starting team and cut losses on starters who haven’t lived up to expectations.

Activating a Trade Boost to make three trades this week is a live option to set up your team for the season ahead.

We asked our panel of experts for their verdict on the 10 most traded in, and most traded out, players in SuperCoach this week.

MOST TRADED OUT

Harry Perryman $407,400 DEF

Al Paton says: SELL. Has already lost money and doesn’t play this week. I’d be wary of trading down to a rookie if it means having two on field in defence – look to go up to a reliable premium instead.

Patch says: SELL. Get him outtttaaaaa here. We’ve goofed here, folks. Corrective time.

Simeon Thomas-Wilson says: SELL. Back to defence following Reef McInnes’ injury. Take what cash you still can and find a better option.

Tim Michell says: SELL. Not going to make money quickly and not close to a top-six defender. Has a bye next round, too. Already lost $10k and has a Break Even of 110. He’s reached that four times since the start of 2021.

Matt Forrest says: SELL. Role isn’t consistent, with McInnes out with a torn ACL there’s a chance Perryman plays more in defence.

Dos says: SELL. Chris De Burgh tried to warn us…

Chloe Williams says: SELL. No CBAs ... get off while you still can.

Tarquin Oakley says: SELL. I waited the extra week to make sure. Now I’m sure – Perryman must go.

Dan Batten says: SELL. Won’t drop in price again this week if you have problems elsewhere, but other defenders will rise.

VERDICT: Sell 9, Hold 0

Finn O’Sullivan $199,000 MID

AP: HOLD: He gets a reprieve after the Elijah Tsatas injury news.

Sim: HOLD: If you don’t have one of the good mid rookies then sell O’Sullivan to them, but he is going to play every week.

Patch: SELL. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with holding Finn, but if you need someone to make way for one of the must-have rookies, he’s the guy.

TM: HOLD: Going to be a slow burn but only needs one score to get the cash rolling. Unless he’s your ticket to Xavier Lindsay.

MF: HOLD: He’ll be a slow burn but that’s OK. Only trade him to get one of the rookies that’s going to spike (O’Driscoll). He’s best 22 and will keep getting better.

Dos: HOLD: Prefer to hold FOS if you can, role and job security seem solid for the slow burn.

CW: SELL. He will come good, but I need to sell to get my cash generation in order, and I’d recommend others do too.

TO: HOLD: If he’s the only option that can get you to Lindsay or Henderson then that’s fair. But North won’t lose patience with O’Sullivan, who will be a star.

DB: HOLD. The role is there and I’m looking to hold for when the No.2 pick’s spike game comes.

Verdict: Sell 2, Hold 7

Will Day $502,500 MID

AP: HOLD. Getting the right rookies is the priority this week. You bought him for the whole season and Hawthorn’s fixture looks a lot more friendly after the bye.

Sim: HOLD: If you have no other fix-up trades required then you can sell him with a Bedford tag this week and then the bye, but his run will open up after that.

Patch: SELL. I think he should be lower down on your priority list but if he’s your biggest problem, then sure.

TM: HOLD: I can understand why people are desperate to jump off but I’m happy to play the long game here and then reassess at the mid-year bye. He’ll get Toby Bedford this week but his fixture opens up post-bye.

MF: SELL. Had one monster game, but has shown he can get tagged out of the contest. Will face Toby Bedford and then has the bye, might be worth jumping ship.

Dos: HOLD: Save the trades, grit your teeth through Bedford, and enjoy the easier run post-bye.

CW: HOLD: It’s a fine line ... I can see why people would sell, with a hard tag and bye imminent. Unfortunately, I have bigger issues and this feels like a luxury trade. I’ll use him as a stepping stone, or at worst, M8. Beware of going sideways ...

TO: HOLD: I’m on the fence and may end up selling. Has the Bedford tag this week, so his price is set to take a hit and then the Hawks are on the bye. But the Richmond and West Coast match-ups in round 7 and 8 could save him.

DB: SELL. Another tag coming up and his outside game means he is more prone to a 70 than other mids.

VERDICT: Sell 3, Hold 6

Jason Horne-Francis $537,000 FWD-MID

AP: HOLD: I should have held my nerve and left him out of my starting team but not using a trade on him now. Still think he’ll be one of the topscoring forwards.

Sim: HOLD: Don’t stress, the Horny one will be fine. Should have had three goals but for some reason did the good teammate thing and dished the ball off.

Patch: HOLD: He’ll come good. He better, or else I’ll paying a visit to the Lair demanding answers.

TM: HOLD: Will be a top-six forward easily. Just needs to get off the angry pills.

MF: HOLD: He’s not one to get up and about for a meaningless game, but over the course of the season he’s a top-six forward. Save yourself two trades and keep him.

Dos: HOLD: Will be a top-six forward for the season.

CW: HOLD: C’mon. If you were smart enough to fade (sorry Al, you don’t count) congrats, but it’s definitely not worth jumping ship now.

TO: HOLD: Picked him as a season keeper so am keeping my faith in Horne-Francis.

DB: HOLD… Just. But that’s more of a reflection of the other premium forwards.

ELIJAH TSATAS $191,200 MID

AP: SELL. Was better last round but will now miss at least two weeks and I can trade him to a rookie who will start making money now.

Sim: SELL. He might only be out for two weeks but there’s better options out there, who importantly can kick the footy.

Patch: SELL. He’ll miss this week coming up, and then Essendon has a round 4 bye. It wouldn’t shock me if Brad Scott then made him the sub on his first game back in round 5, either so I’ll be trading him out, and if he’s named for a full game on his return then I’ll consider trading someone like a Finn O’Sullivan to him.

TM: HOLD: Break Even of -21 and should get another crack when he returns from injury, which looks likely to be post bye. Essendon won’t say it, but it’s rebuilding and it needs to play the kids like Tsatas even if his game still has a few obvious flaws.

MF: HOLD: Only missing one game (and then the bye), he’s scoring well despite poor time on ground and plays a SuperCoach friendly game.

Dos: SELL. Injury aside, if “good kicking is good SuperCoach” (copyright, Phantom) his time may have been numbered anyway.

CW: SELL. If you need to grab Lindsay, Henderson, Ashcroft or O’Driscoll. If you have other avenues to must-have rookies, you could hold, but you won’t reap the cash gen rewards for another two weeks. His time on ground is also worrying with Parish to return.

TO: HOLD: The Bombers say he should return in round 5, so I’m willing to hold the line and get that price rise then after a promising 78 on the weekend.

DB: HOLD. Midfield rookie spots are valuable but his last outing was encouraging. I’d prefer to trade a dropped cash cow if you can manage it.

VERDICT: Sell 5, Hold 4

SuperCoach AFL: Buy, Hold, Sell - Round 3 with The Phantom!

Ben Paton $133,400 DEF-FWD

AP: HOLD: Just for this week, then next week we can turn him into Riley Bice.

Sim: HOLD: Just so he can become Riley Bice next week

Patch: SELL. Nothing wrong with holding him for a week to wait for Riley Bice, but if you need to move someone on then he’s a prime candidate. The DPP is handy, too.

TM: HOLD: But only for how handy that DEF-FWD DPP is. It’s already opened up a few extra trade options for me being able to swing Paton to F7.

MF: HOLD: For now. He had 32 touches in the VFL, but after a win he might struggle to break into that backline again. If he’s not named, can change this to sell.

Dos: SELL. Out of the team already and Swans injury list is shrinking.

CW: HOLD: Once again this is personal because of my previously referenced bigger issues, but plan to move him when you can. I wouldn’t say it’s a top necessity this week, though.

TO: HOLD.Sydney’s bye comes at a great time, as we can focus on other trade options before swapping Paton for Riley Bice next week.

DB: SELL. Already out of the side and there is a wave of Sydney defenders in line to return after the bye.

VERDICT: Sell 3, Hold 6

Hugo Garcia $245,800 FWD-MID

AP: SELL. I’m a big Hugo fan but starting as the sub in round 2 is not what I paid $245k for. Get someone cheaper.

Sim: SELL. We fell for the trap, didn’t we? Get one of the good rookies in.

Patch: SELL. Don’t want any of that sub action please Ross. Nuh uh. No, thank you.

TM: SELL. It feels like a lifetime ago St Kilda was sending out social media videos pumping up his pre-season. Writing is on the wall after being sub in round 2.

MF: SELL. A classic pre-season breakout that didn’t translate. The sub vest is not a good sign.

Dos: SELL. Awkwardly priced and now a weekly sub risk.

CW: SELL. I always had a bad feeling about this. Sub vest = trade out.

TO: SELL. A poor score in round 1 and was the sub in round 2. Time to move on.

DB: SELL. Can’t be holding a guy who was the sub at that price.

VERDICT: Sell 9, Hold 0

Ryley Sanders $339,100 FWD-MID

AP: SELL. Has a Break Even of 64 this week so probably won’t lose money but he’s not the breakout star we were hoping for.

Sim: HOLD. But if he doesn’t show anything this week then sell him.

Patch: HOLD. Hasn’t lived up to the hype but I don’t think it’s panic stations. If you’ve got all your rookies set then move him on.

TM: SELL. At one stage against Collingwood he was playing full-forward. Dare we say it but you have been Bevo’d.

MF: SELL. Mid-pricers are for decent points and decent cash gen. Sanders isn’t providing either.

Dos: SELL. Had good moments late but don’t see the breakout being big enough to be worth the hold.

CW: HOLD. Trealor has had another setback ... but Sanders is on thin ice. It’s a 50-50 call, but I’d hold a while longer and sort out your rookies.

TO: SELL. Just hasn’t fit the bill at all. CBAs dropped from 14 in round 1 to just three in round 2.

DB: SELL. I ended up doing it last week after Flynn was out. You should, too.

VERDICT: Sell 6, Hold 3

Jayden Short $442,300 DEF

AP: SELL. The Tigers share the kick-ins around and just don’t win enough of the ball. Might score OK against St Kilda this week but won’t be a top-six defender.

Sim: SELL. You could keep him for a clash against the Saints but he isn’t going to be the option we thought he would be, unfortunately.

Patch: SELL. I’m trying very hard not to say I told you so but he can get outta here. It was never going to happen and, lo and behold, it hasn’t happened.

TM: SELL. I’ll probably have to hold but I really don’t like it. Why on earth is Ben Miller taking kick-ins? How this bloke sucks me in every year I’ll never know.

MF: SELL. You started Short? After being burnt so many times before? Boot him.

Dos: HOLD. It’s a gross hold, but I’ll give him one more week.

CW: SELL. I considered holding, I really did ... I’m sure he will get 140 against the Saints but I’m no longer wanting to be a part of this sad rollercoaster that just goes down, without any fun loops or anything. I’m upgrading to a premo.

TO: HOLD: If I was free of other problems Short may be gone. But I definitely am not.

DB: SELL. You can’t score when your side can’t win the ball…

VERDICT: Sell 7, Hold 2

Matt Flynn $261,900 RUC

AP: SELL. All comes down to teams but Bailey Williams was pretty good at the weekend until he suffered cramp. If he’s not named, get off quick.

Sim: SELL. Is he actually any good?

Patch: SELL. Who knows if he’ll be back. Get him outta here.

TM: HOLD. I think he plays this week.

MF: SELL. We knew his position was precarious, but I didn’t expect him to last one week.

Dos: HOLD. Surely back in the team this week after Bailey Williams subbed out and Archer Reid‘s entire body cramping.

CW: HOLD. I have all fingers crossed that he comes back in, dominates, and makes people regret trading ... I’m an optimist, I support Carlton ...

TO: SELL. If he isn’t picked again move him on. Not worth waiting and fielding only 22 players if he is your Flex.

DB: WAIT. Bailey Williams was subbed out, so wait for teams to see if Flynn is recalled this week.

VERDICT: Sell 5, Hold 3, Wait 1

Tom Stewart $521,000 DEF

AP: HOLD. Knee injury not as bad as we thought. Even if he misses a week we can cover him with best 18 scoring.

Sim: HOLD. Could only miss one week at the most. Trade and you will regret it

Patch: HOLD. A chance to play this week, and even if he doesn’t then it’s still Best 18.

TM: HOLD. Chance to play this round and might only miss one game if he is out. The last time I traded him with a knee injury he returned after a week out with a score of 167. I still have nightmares about it.

MF: HOLD. He’ll drop in price but the knee injury isn’t expected to keep him out of footy.

Dos: SELL. Never. Again. List. (If he’s named and you’ve got other issues, holding is permitted).

CW: HOLD. He may be better soon. He may not be. Worth holding for best 18.

TO: HOLD: Might play this week!

DB: WAIT. Remains in the mix to play, so sit and see – but have a trade free until 7.29pm on Saturday night.

VERDICT: Sell 1, Hold 7, Wait 1

MOST TRADED IN

Xavier Lindsay $158,500 MID

Al Paton says: BUY: Make him your No.1 target unless you don’t have Nathan O’Driscoll. Then he’s No.2.

Sim says: BUY: Looks to be the must-rookie this year.

Patch says: BUY: No.1 option this week, bring him in.

Tim Mitchell says: BUY: Genuine on-field rookie option scoring 70-plus and set to make a stack of cash. Arguably the must-have rookie of 2025.

Matt Forrest says: Should be on everyone’s radar. I can’t see him being a sub risk, playing too well.

Dos says: BUY: Might be the best rookie we get all year.

Chloe Williams says: BUY. Love the role, love the cash gen. Yes, please!

Tarquin Oakley says: BUY. Show me the money.

Dan Batten says: BUY. So well rounded and has proven he can score well in an outside midfield role.

VERDICT: Buy 9, Pass 0

Connor O’Sullivan $148,700 DEF

AP: PASS. Adding rookies in defence is not where I want to go, and I’m planning to bring in Riley Bice next week.

Sim: BUY. Still have some questions but the other rookie defender options aren’t great.

Patch: PASS. Not for me with some more moving pieces down back for the Cats.

TM: BUY. I think. I’m still torn on this one. After all, he didn’t score well in round 1. But the last time I traded a Cats rookie who seemed to have average job security was Ollie Dempsey and he won the Rising Star.

MF: PASS. Was outstanding last week, but Geelong is unpredictable and has a few guys coming back soon. Jake Kolodjashnij is one, and who knows if Sam De Koning stays in the ruck.

Dos: PASS. Not willing to rely on too many rookies in defence. Prefer Bice next week.

CW: PASS. I feel like there’s other options on the horizon, and considering it’s best 18, I would rather wait and target Bice next week. Kolodjashnij’s potential return and Stewart’s injury timeline make him a watch, rather than a buy for me.

TO: PASS. Lindsay, O’Driscoll and Henderson are all better options. If you have them all, then sure!

DB: BUY. The round 2 Rising Star nominee won’t have perfect conditions under the roof this week, but his job security has certainly strengthened.

VERDICT: Buy 3, Pass 6

Nathan O’Driscoll $198,000 MID

AP: BUY. Most reliable scorer of all the rookies and will make us a truckload of cash. Must-have.

Sim: BUY: Scoring ability looks to be there

Patch: BUY: A must-have.

TM: BUY. Noddy has relished the extra inside midfield time with Hayden Young out and looks destined to make more than $100k.

MF: BUY. Probably the No.1 rookie priced option. If you can afford him.

Dos: BUY. The bounce back year is on. Also a fun player to watch.

CW: BUY. I had him all pre-season and can’t remember why I took him out. He’s back. He even scored well with limited CBAs, so Hayden Young’s return in a few weeks shouldn’t prove a huge worry.

TO: BUY. Two 90s from the Docker so far should see him in majority of SuperCoach teams.

DB: BUY. The top rookie priority this week.

VERDICT: Buy 9, Pass 0

Bailey Dale $528,100 DEF

AP: BUY. With Caleb Daniel gone, Jason Johannisen injured and Ed Richards and Joel Freijah in the midfield, Bale has the D50 all to himself. Only worry is if that makes him a tag target at some stage.

Sim: BUY: Racking it up down back for the Dogs.

Patch: BUY. I’m going slightly more expensive but he’s a good option.

TM: BUY. Scary to think what Dale might have scored against Collingwood if he’d had his usual feast of kick-ins. He’s been one of the best SuperCoach defenders since Bevo made him sub early last year.

MF: PASS. Started like a house on fire last year, then got Bevo’d. Loves a one-two though, so I can see the interest.

Dos: BUY. Looking like a sneaky top-six defender chance.

CW: PASS. It pains me to say, but I may have to miss on Dale in order to secure who I think could finish as D1 this year. I am a sucker for value, though ...

TO: BUY. The Bulldogs love the ball in his hands.

DB: BUY. Definitely underpriced, but how long until he starts copping tags?

VERDICT: Buy 7, Pass 2

Joel Freijah $370,400 DEF

AP: MAYBE: Rapt I started him but not sure I’d be buying into him this week. Has been on about 30 points at halftime in both games before flying home.

Sim: BUY. Started with him and have been very happy with how he has been playing. Mid time has been a bonus, too, and Adam Treloar is out for longer.

Patch: BUY. Looks like one of the best mid-priced options on offer this season. Coming into my team.

TM: BUY. Nathan Buckley called him the right-footed Bont and while that’s a bit premature, Freijah looks destined to be a star. He’s put up 70-plus points in consecutive second halves.

MF: PASS. Freijah was on about 30 points before a massive last quarter. Plus he’s contending with Dale for the ball. Not for me.

Dos: BUY. Treloar’s extended absence makes him even more tempting.

CW: PASS. Another painful one, but after already choosing SDK, I can’t fit both in for now. If you’re yet to boot Perryman, though, get this guy in!

TO: BUY. His confidence is up and he’ll continue to get midfield exposure with Bont and Treloar still a while away.

DB: BUY. A prime role and will make cash. Wish I didn’t go early on De Koning…

VERDICT: Buy 6, Pass 2, Maybe 1

Jack Henderson $99,100 MID

AP: BUY. Trade down from any other non-playing or non-performing rookie, bank some cash and watch him skyrocket in value.

Sim: BUY. Cheap as chips option who can score well. Get him in

Patch: BUY: Also a must-have option.

TM: BUY: As cheap as anyone but playing and scoring well. This is one bargain you can’t afford to miss out on.

MF: BUY. Sub vest is a risk, but Henderson could be the 2025 version of Shaun Mannagh. He’ll probably snag forward eligibility, too.

Dos: BUY: Lots of coin to be made.

CW: PASS. I held a trade last week, which has limited my moves for this week. I can’t fit Hendo in, but, like Freijah, if you can, you should.

TO: BUY. A cash cow under $100k? Sign me up.

DB: BUY. Kysaiah Pickett will come back, but surely others get dropped ahead of Henderson.

VERDICT: Buy 8, Pass 1

Finn Callaghan $441,600 MID

AP: BUY. Starting Finn cost me some points last week but hopefully it gives me an edge when others have to use a trade this week to jump on.

Sim: BUY. Could get tags after his red-hot start to the year, but also could be a keeper.

Patch: MAYBE. He’ll be good, folks, but if you’re like me and have the option between Freijah and Callaghan, I’m taking the option which gets defensive rookies off my field.

TM: BUY. Still filthy on one of our experts who talked a few of us out of him then picked Callaghan anyway. I think tags will start coming his way, though, potentially as early as round 5 against St Kilda. He’s much more damaging than Tom Green, who’d usually get the attention.

MF: PASS. He’s been fantastic, but I get a feeling we’re chasing points. I do see him averaging 105-110, so if you want to buy an M8 early then he’s a good option.

Dos: BUY. A great starting pick for those bold enough to trust their own instincts. Jump on late if you missed out, Tim!

CW: PASS. I tipped Callaghan for a breakout year, but didn’t roll the dice on starting him ... I will have to regrettably pass while I fix other issues, I’m trying my best not to sideways trade this year. I will watch in sadness instead.

TO: BUY. Looks like having that breakout year many predicted.

DB: BUY. Was only a matter of time before he became a SuperCoach stud, and 2025 looks like the year.

VERDICT: Buy 6, Pass 2, Maybe 1

Jack Macrae $392,200 FWD

AP: BUY. It was a brave call to start without him. Correct that error now and we’ll never speak of it again.

Sim: BUY. If you didn’t start with him do everything you can to bring him in.

Patch: BUY: Bring him in and whack the C on him. Has Richmond this week. Fill your boots, Jack.

TM: BUY. Probably the must-have player of 2025. Amazing that a midfielder scores well in SuperCoach when played as a midfielder.

MF: He’s exactly what St Kilda needed, his role is not an issue. Buy buy buy.

Dos: BUY: The Kane Cornes caller got it wrong. He’s actually the best ‘FORWARD’ in the competition!

CW: BUY. Why is he on this list.

TO: BUY. And a great captaincy option against the Tigers this week.

DB: BUY. Even Kane Cornes has Macrae in his SuperCoach team.

VERDICT: Buy 9, Pass 0

Dayne Zorko $595,100 DEF

AP: BUY. I’m shopping for a premium defender this week and there is more value in players like Bailey Dale or Jordan Clark, but Zorko just finds ways to score a lot of SuperCoach points every week, even at age 36. And he has Richmond in two weeks.

Sim: PASS. Yes, he has Richmond soon, but there’s more value in guys who aren’t 36.

Patch: PASS. I’m not convinced despite Zorko the Magnificent starting the season with a 130 average. Kiddy Coleman will be back, he’s not getting younger... I don’t see it lasting.

TM: BUY. It defies all logic that a guy who seemed to be on his last legs is now scoring 120s weekly in a role he didn’t play until he was 35. He’s at the feeding trough with Luke Ryan, Jordan Clark, Bailey Dale and Lachie Whitfield every week.

MF: PASS. Was a great starting option but we knew he had soft match-ups to start the season.

Dos: PASS. Father Time might have taken his first L, but I’ve got a feeling he’s looking to even the score.

CW: PASS. He is on a heater, but I’m looking elsewhere at the moment ... my life would be much easier if I had stuck to my guns and started him. I could be wrong, but I feel like he’s one that you just had to start. He does have Richmond soon, though.

TO: BUY. An absolute pig in the best way possible.

DB: BUY. Tasty match-ups against Geelong and Richmond to come. Oink oink.

VERDICT: Buy 4, Pass 5

Connor Rozee $529,400

AP: PASS. Bad miss by me not to start him but I’m doubling down. Zak Butters will be back in a few weeks, you’ve already missed the Richmond match-up and I’m not sure we should be buying premium midfielders this week.

Sim: BUY. The Power captain is on a mission this year after his injury-impacted campaign in 2024.

Patch: BUY. Rookies are the priority but if you’re shopping around, you could do worse.

TM: BUY. But be wary of tags. The Port skipper is airborne but has clamps coming his way – potentially from this week. Marcus Windhager awaits in round 4 and James Jordon in round 6.

MF: BUY. Gun midfielder, scored well in a big win and big loss, might cop attention but he can go forward and be damaging there, too.

Dos: BUY. It’s tough to fit all these guys in, but if you have room, Rozee is still great value.

CW: BUY. I already have him (subtle brag), and I’m hoping potential taggers will go to JHF. Like Dale, a good mix of points and value ... maybe I should reconsider Dale!

TO: BUY. Standing up in the absence of Butters. Finds plenty of ball and hits the scoreboard, too.

DB: BUY. He dropped a 150 on Essendon last year, and he faces the Bombers this week.

VERDICT: Buy 8, Pass 1
